FIRST ADDITION:

Secrets of the Tomb
Skull and Bones the Ivy League and the Hidden Paths of Power

by Alexandra Robbins

Reviewed by Lucinda MacGregor

I anxiously anticipated the release of this book as I have a lifelong interest in researching secret societies, subversive movements, and conspiracies (not all such things are paranoid nonsense). Unfortunately Robbins' book was a disappointment.  The excerpt of the book on Robbins' website convinces the reader that she reveals ALL.  The highlight of her book is the only revealing part, the rest of it does not reveal much of anything.  Robbins spends the majority of her book talking about the early history of Skull and Bones.  It is exceptionally boring and makes one wonder why anyone would ever want to join such a silly organization.  Robbins leads the reader down a path in the wrong direction.  She is simply an apologist for Skull and Bones.  Robbins spends only one chapter discussing that most members have worked or still have a career in government or the world of high finance (that is true throughout the history of the group).  Many of the positions in government are important ones such as the former President Bush as well as the current president.  There is also a small section that includes an experience by an outsider who luckily slips into a room while the membership is participating in an occultish ritual.  It is somewhat disturbing and their reaction to discovering the outsider amongst them is far more disturbing. That is the only truly revealing part of the book. It is wise to know where the author is coming from and that, at least, she reveals.  Robbins attended Yale and attained membership in another secret society.  She obviously moves in the right circles.  It certainly makes more sense that she is doing a PR job for the Skull and Bones as opposed to the slim possibility that she would write anything that exposes them.  Robbins makes the claim that they are not happy with her book.  Of course, she would say that to make it convincing that her book is all there is to tell about the Skull and Bones.  This reviewer has researched secret societies for many years and does not buy into her PR job.

Robbins attempts to convince readers that there is not much conspiratorial activity going on (nor throughout their history of approximately 150 years) inside the Skull and Bones temple (or tomb).  Then why such a long history of secrecy?  The membership never reveals anything.  Robbins claims it is part of their mystic.  Once again she is not convincing.  Even if they did nothing wrong but steal Geronimo's bones and some extremely valuable artwork, they are not nice guys.  Fortunately I read a library copy.  Serious researchers should read it to compare with other works written about Skull and Bones.  For anyone looking for an entertaining read do not waste good money on this one.
