When I was in hospitable,
recovering from an operation, I had more time to think than I would
normally have. I had the leisure to try to work out what I felt about
things, to try to distill the thought into as few words as possible.
It got to be a habit and I have continued to add to those thoughts,
whenever I get something worked out.
Five Facts:
The more water you take out, the
less there will be in the bucket.
The more food you eat, the less
there will be on the table.
When the light is gone, there
will be darkness left.
The rich can't get richer without
the poor getting poorer.
If there isn't a question, there
can't be an answer.
We won't ask the question if
we're afraid of the answer.
Nothing is invisible. A thing is
either too large to be seen completely, or too small for the focus of
our eyes.
Just because you can't see
everything, is no reason to think infinity does not exist. Sight has limits.
Eternity is time without a
beginning or an end. Still, each person's slice of time in this life
is their personal eternity.
The main problem with life is not
that we don't know the answer, but that we don't even know the
question. When we ask the right question, we will get the right answer.
The ultimate answer to ever
question is either Yes or No. If we look beyond that, we will never
be sure what the answer is.
Every drawing is made up of
lines. It is only necessary to put the lines in the right position to
get the right shape.
Things are best explained when
they are not obscured by too many words.
There is a certain point beyond
which help becomes a hindrance.
That the necessities of life have
to be bought and paid for, distorts the reality. It is what makes the
unnecessary seem necessary.
The best reason for staying alive
is being alive. Life needs no excuse.
Frequent use of the mind may hone
it, yet over use will blunt it's edge.
The economy of the world is
driven by greed rather than necessity. It isn't that people need so
many things, it's just that they want them.
In order to want a thing, you
must know it exists. If you don't know it exists, you won't want it.
Thought is like a goldfish in a
bowl, thinking it is going somewhere, yet always in the same place,
going around in circles.
If a person thinks too much, they
won't do anything. If a person does too much, they won't think
anything. Balance is essential, but is probably never achieved.
Life is movement. Without
movement, there's no life. Death means only stillness. In the
universe, there's no such thing as stillness. Therefore there's
really no such thing as death.
Can time really be wasted? It's
there to be used, but there are different ways of using it. No matter
what we do or don't do, time is being used. We don't know if what we
do is valuable or not. It's all just learning in spite of ourselves.
Are we here for some important reason or are we here just to play? I
would be inclined to believe the last. We learn better if we enjoy ourselves.
Is thought worthless? Instead of
doing things as the need or occasion arises, people are forever
thinking what they will do, or remembering what they have done. The
only thing that exists is the now. Anything else can only be
imaginary. The body doesn't need thought to function. Two different
object do not need reminding that they can't inhabit the same space
at the same time. Facts will be facts and don't need to be realised
by thought.
Sometimes it is easier to see a
thought when it is written out on paper. On paper, it becomes
isolated. In your mind, it becomes mixed up with too many other things.
There can't really be anything
new in the world. When we think something is new, we are only looking
at it from a different angle.
Things contradict each other. If
they didn't they would not be many things, only one.
Food that is too refined is not
absorbed by the body. Thought that is too refined, is not absorbed by
the mind.
The Lord provides for all, but
some people take the lot.
What is the use in having a mind
of your own, if you just stuff it with other people's ideas,
unquestioned and unchallenged? Your head might just as well be empty.
That way you would do less harm in the world.
War is humanity hemorrhaging
itself. It isn't merely stupidity. It's lunacy.
It is always best to have your
own opinion on something. Of course one's own opinion can be wrong -
but so can that of other people. So you have nothing to loose by
having your own.
Those who found the learning easy
may find the teaching hard. To know a thing well, it must have been
difficult for you to learn. What you learn easily, you forget easily.
It leaves no signposts to the knowledge in your mind.
Why do people mix up wisdom with
knowledge? Because you know a lot of things doesn't mean you are
wise. Wisdom consists in using the knowledge you have in the best way
possible. Merely knowing how to do it, isn't enough, it's only
more knowledge. To be wise, you must make the best use possible of
what you actually have. To the stupid, knowledge is like a fine set
of clothes. To the wise, knowledge is a tool.
No matter what any one may think,
facts remain constant. It's just very difficult to see them through
the curtains of opinion.
If people used fewer words and
kept them simple and clear, there would be less misunderstanding.
Unfortunately, it would seem that the less people know, the more they
talk, and most of it is just camouflage.
A person should have power over
their own lives. No one's power should extend beyond that.
The world is full of traps, and
every one gets caught in them at least once or twice in their
lifetime. The epitome of learning is never to get caught in the same
one twice.
It seems to be a law of nature
that there must be a bit of bad in everything. That is why even the
best writers write badly at times. Some write badly when they're
young, some write badly when they're old and some write badly all
their life. And it never makes a blind bit of difference to the
people who read them.
People aren't afraid of the dark.
They're afraid of what might be in it.
Truly, who knows anything about
existence? All the rules of religions, and all their scriptures,
which were supposedly the will and word of God, were written by
people and reflect the societies and times in which they were
written, and, no doubt, the prejudices of the people who wrote them.
It all comes down to belief in the end and to believe something good,
is the best that anyone can do.
Christianity is just one of the
cults that survived.
Understatement is better than
overstatement. It gives people more room in which to think.
Making a living and making money
are two different things. Making a living is necessary, making money
is not.
The people who succeed are not
the people with ability, but the people with determination.
The rich build their fortunes on
the ability of others.
Knowing how to do a thing
counts for nothing. You have to actually go and do it.
The meaning of life is - life.
A poor intelligence often hides
behind a good memory.
Most people's opinions are formed
from what they hear, rather than what they know.
When several people are giving
their opinion, the one who shouts the loudest and the most often is
the one who is believed.
When people are too lazy to think
for themselves, then their opinions will always be other people's
opinions, never their own.
Without doubt there would be no
progress. When certainty arrives, progress ends.
If "Infinity" and
"Eternity" are real things and not just abstract ideas,
then there can never be an end, and there has never been a beginning.
if neither Eternity nor Infinity
can be measured, and science cannot function without measurements,
then these ideas cannot be explored with the tools of science.
Nothing can be defined without
reference to something else. If all the world was water, we still
wouldn't know what wet was, because we'd never have known what dry was. |
