I was outside, listening to some music on the radio, when I heard a news bulletin about the attack on the World Trade Centre in New York, and the Pentagon. It had such a third-world-war-end-of-the-world feel to it that the words "April Fool" were the first that came into my mind. And even when I realised it was September, I still felt it was some sort of sick joke put out by the broadcasters. It just didn't seem that something like that could be real. Having seen the carnage on the television and heard all about it, it is still difficult to believe that people could do such things, that such a malignant evil could exist. Yet, it would be well to remember that it does exist, and no one is safe from its influence, and that, like a disease, it can infect others. The danger now, is that it will precipitate evil acts by others, who will use this as their excuse. But no excuse can make evil justified, and two wrongs will not cancel each other out and make a right. It will simply make evil stronger. I hope the United States and the world will rise above this and look for justice rather than revenge. Hatred is a poison that evil feeds on. If the world were without it, what a different place it would be. |
