    A Gothic Timeline

      (ish) 410-660
The Germanic tribe known as the Goths (probably from Gottland off the coast of Denmark) conquered the Roman Empire. They ruled for about 250 years before fading off into forgotten history.

      (ish) 1100-1500
Gothic art was at its peak.

      (ish) 1100-1600
Gothic architecture was at its peak.

      1764
The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole was published. It has long since been considered the first Gothic novel.

      1764-1834
Gothic literature was at its peak. (Think Ann Radcliffe and Percy Bysshe Shelley.)

      end of WWII-1960
The Beatnik Movement. The Beats were writers who were all about individualism and philosophy. Early Goths, if you ask me.

      September 1979
Tony Wilson first applied the term "Gothic" to music. He used it to describe the music of Joy Division, which he said was "gothic" compared to mainstream pop at the time.

      July 1982
The Batcave, the prototype for Goth clubs and rallying point for the Goth movement, opened in London.
