Charlotte Perkins Gliman Bio

    Charlotte Perkins Gliman (1860-1935):

Gilman, best known for her short story, "The Yellow Wallpaper," was born on July 3rd, 1860 in Hartford, Connecticut. Her parents were Frederick Beecher Perkins and Mary Westcott Perkins and she was the great-niece of Harriet Beecher Stowe. Charlotte had one brother, Thomas Adie, and two other siblings who died in infancy. Her father left them after the death of their infant in 1866, not long after doctors warned her mother that she should not have any more children. His disapperance left them nearly penniless and at the mercy of relatives.

Charlotte was mostly self-taught although she spent two years at the Rhode Island School of Design (1878-1880). She made a living as a greeting card artist.

Although Charlotte swore never to marry (probably a result of her rocky childhood), she married Charles Walter Stetson...A marriage that ended in divorce which was controversial for that time. Charlotte and Charles had one daughter, Katherine Beecher Stetson who was born March 23, 1885. She married George Houghton Gilman (her cousin) many years later and they remained happily married until his sudden death in May 4, 1934. Following George's death, Charlotte and Katherine moved to California to be with relatives.

In 1932, Charlotte was diagnosed with incurable breast cancer. As an advocate of "the right to die," she chose to committe suicide on August 17, 1935 in Pasadena, California by over-dosing on chloroform.

During her life, Gilman was a feminist (although she refused the title herself). She believed strongely in women's rights, espeically the rights to vote and to have economic freedom. Charlotte Gilman was the founder/editor of her own feminist magazine, The Forerunner (1909 to 1916). She also wrote over two hundred short stories and ten novels in her life.
