Texas Hold'em poker is a game of both skill and luck. The luck factor goes up and down and over the long run will even out to be equal for everybody. The player with the better skill is the one who will usually go home with a fatter wallet, while the weak players whine about how unlucky they were. There are some known variables with Texas Hold'em. First is the preflop value of any pair of cards. Since there are only 52 cards in a deck, there are only a maximum of 169 different combinations of 2 cards possible. Through some computer simulations and real life data, it is possible to rank each pair of cards relative to each other. This list can be found at our strategy page. You will also want to know what your chances are for completing certain hands. Basically, this is not rocket science. You can get by with an intuitive assesment of how many cards are out there that will complete your hand. If you are holding a pair, there are only 2 cards out there than can turn it into 3 or a kind. If you are waiting for a flush to come on the turn or river, you have however many of that suit are left in the deck to make your hand. Difference between and inside and outside straight is the difference in the number of "outs" that will help you. You will want to pay attention to what flops, turns and rivers. Dont be stubborn and hang on to KK if the community cards are showing a good possiblity that you could be beat with AA, straight or flush.
Even though in online poker, you cannot see your opponent and therefore you do not have as much information about what they might be holding judging by their demeanor, you can still get a sense of what is happening by how fast someone bets, and ofcourse, by carefully taking notes on how they are playing in general.
