Takara (ID#SWC-OO-9126)
female orca
Born on July 9, 1991 at Sea World California.
Takara has spent her whole life at SWC, until recently when she and Kohana were moved to Florida. (April 24, 2004)
Takara is Japanese for "treasure" or "jewel"
Mother: Kasatka (captured in 10/1978; currently the dominant female at SWC)
Father: Kotar (deceased, captured in 10/1978, d: 4/1/1995)
half brothers: Keet (SWT, b: 2/2/1993. same father, mother Kalina: SWF), Keto (Loro Parque, b: 6/17/1995. same father, mother Kalina: SWF), Nakai (SWC, b: 9/1/2001. same mother, father Tilikum: SWF)
half sister: Kalia (SWC, b: 12/21/04. same mother, father Keet: SWT, she is also her niece)
calves: Kohana (Loro Parque, b: 5/3/2002) and Trua (SWF, b: 11/23/05)
Takara was the second orca to be artificially inseminated. This was when she was pregnant with Kohana.
Even as a mother Takara remains one of the most interactive orca at SWC, she will still come up to the acrylic interested in people, and try to play. She also is a good mother. Kohana seems to be a lot more dependent on Takara than Nakai was on Kasatka, but shows more independence as she grows. Takara also has a very close bond with her own mother, Kasatka.
Takara is a smaller orca. The only orcas she is larger than are the youngsters.
Length: about 16.5 feet
Weight: about 4,600 lbs
She looks a lot like her mother, both having a black spot in their left eye patch and both having a nick down their dorsal fin.
The most obvious way to ID Takara is her dark stain on her chin that has been there since she was born. She also is a lot narrower than her mother is, and her head is a lot narrower than her mother's much rounder head.
Transfers: Takara moved to SWF from SWC on April 24, 2004
