Halyn's name means "unique, unlike any other"- American origin.
Halyn was rejected by her mother, 17-year-old Kayla, shortly after birth. She was immediately moved to animal care where the SWT staff started hand-rearing her. This included tube feeding her formula as well as milk they collected from Kayla. She was watched 24 hours a day. She was put with a female Bottlenose dolphin for a short time but it didn't work out so the dolphin was removed.
This is the first time Sea World has had to hand-rear an orca calf. Though they have had success with other species of dolphins.
In may at 6 months old she was moved to Shamu Stadium for the first time since her birth. She is now weaned and eating fish. She is staying in one of the back pools before she is introduced to the other orcas. She will be introduced to the rest one at a time.

There was no pole to choose her name. Instead trainers chose it for her. I personally like the name. It's very cute.
Tuar and Tekoa were present at birth. A few hours after birth Katina, Ikaika and Taku were introduced to the calf.
Skyla was moved to Loro Parque in Tenerife, Canary Islands on February 14, 2006 along with Keto, Kohana, and Tekoa.
