May 28 2007:
I went to RPP when the park opened at 9:00 AM. I played with the dolphins for about 25 minutes until I realized that the gate to the wave pool was closed, and the trainers were observing something. By this time I had pet everyone, everyone except Stein. I knew he was not in the pool. I went around the back to the wave pool and sure enough, there was Stein. He was alone. Right away, I knew something wasn't right. He was in the deep end floating on his side. Within a few minutes, he was in the shallow end. He started floating on his side again. He slowly drifted toward the rocks until he was putting his body weight on them. Trainers rushed to his aid. They sat in the water holding him up. He didn't live much longer after that.

Stein was probably the most famous dolphin at SWC. He was the oldest, he was the sweetest, and he was the "one with no teeth." He was loved by many: human and dolphin (of several different species). There will be an emptiness at SWC that no one can fill. It's really hard when an older animal is lost; it means they were known the longest. No one can remember a time without Stein because, really, there almost wasn't a time without Stein.
We will all miss you Stein. Rest in Peace.

He is the oldest bottlenose dolphin at SWC, and he is thought to be in his mid-40s. He used to be a show dolphin and is now retired. He had been in animal care for a long time. He has recently moved back to RPP for the second time. He is a sweety. He comes up to anyone, and he stays for so long.
Physical description: He is a medium sized dolphin. The easiest way to ID him is his rostrum. The upper jaw and lower jaw do not meet in the middle. He also has very many rake marks, no teeth, and his "lips" sink into his mouth when it's open. He is the prettiest dolphin you'll ever see. If you do happen to interact with him please tell him many times how gorgeous he is.
Dolphin you may be most likely to confuse him with: Scarback, up close it's easy to tell the difference in their faces.
