Splash (ID#SWC-OO-9226)
male orca
August 15, 1989- April 5, 2005
Splash was a very special orca to many people. I have many fond memories of him. Many times when he
came over to play at the glass or when he came over to play at the wading pool. I will miss him so much. He was a very special whale and I will never forget him.
I am going to leave the rest of his bio intact.
He was captive born at Marineland Canada. Nootka gave birth to him after a 12-month pregnancy, making Splash 5 months premature.
He came to SWC in 1992 at 2 1/2 years old. At Marineland, his name was Katak; it was later changed at SWC to Splash.
Splash has no family at SWC, they all live at Marineland Canada.
Father: Kandu VII (deceased, capt: 11/1984 d: 12/21/2005)
Mother: Nootka V (capt: 10/1979)
Sisters: Neocia (deceased, b: 10/21/1992 d 8/01/2004), Malik (deceased, b: 4/21/1996 d: 3/29/2000)
Brother: Algonquin (deceased, b: 12/18/1999 d: 8/13/2002)
Half-brothers: Hudson (deceased, b: 9/15/1998 d: 10/20/2004), Kanuck (deceased, b: 8/28/1994 d: 1998), Nova (deceased, b: 11/6/1996 d: 8/20/2001), they all have the same father, Kandu, but their mother is Kiska.
Half-sister: Athena (b: 8/8/2004)
He is a fairly interactive orca. He really likes to play in the morning, but he will come up almost anytime. He will interact with the guests a lot if the other orcas are as well.
He is the second largest male in the pool and the fourth largest orca in the pool, but he is still growing.
Length: about 18 feet
Weight: about 5,200 lbs
So you can recognize him:
He has the most scars out of all the orcas at SWC. The most noticeable is the one on his right eye patch where it has a large mark that nearly covers the entire eye patch.
He has a badly ripped up chin and no teeth due to an accident when he ran into the wall of the tank after a seizure. His mouth is permanently open at the tip of the rostrum due to this. When he did that he was swimming with Orkid and he was 5 years old. He also has epilepsy, and has mild seizures for that he receives medication.
Splash has a triangular dorsal fin that is leaning more and more to the left. His tail flukes also are easy to recognize because they have black spots all along the edge where the white turns into black. It looks as if someone took a sponge and kind of sponge painted him.
