10/6/05 report:
I was lucky and got to see the baby when it was only 6 hours old. Here is my report from it's first day of life.
Sandy gave birth at 7:15 AM on Thursday 10/6. They had the stadium open for calf viewing from 12-5:30. I went at about 1:30 and stayed until about 3:00. The calf is so cute, anyone who can should go see it. They don't know whether it's male or female, they don't even have a guess, or at least they didn't at the time. Sandy was bringing the calf pretty close to the glass but the calf was usually on the other side of Sandy. Bullet was in the show pool with Sandy and the calf. Bullet seemed very interested in the calf. When the calf would nurse she would go right up to the baby and stare at it.
The calf seems very healthy. She left Sandy's side twice. One time she was half way across the pool. She nursed a lot too.
The baby was being very active. It even went half way across the pool without Sandy. It splashed a whole bunch while trying to swim at the surface, it made me laugh.
Sandy would also get really hyper and start swimming fast. Sometimes she would start pushing her baby around the pool with her rostrum. One time she was pushing the baby while was upside down. The baby ended up on her belly, Sandy kept swimming. So she was going around giving the baby a ride on her belly. The baby would almost always nurse at the surface, it was so strange. Her face would sometimes even be above water while she was nursing. That was the cutest thing.

10/16/05 report:
I got to see the baby a second time today. This time mother and baby were in the DIP pool. Sandy was being fed a lot while I was there so she was speed swimming and she would jump up with the baby a lot. It was nice to be closer to the baby. Later Sandy and baby were put back in the show pool so the trainers could do a DIP session.

Now: She is growing nicely and can now be seen doing DIP alongside her mother.
