Kasatka (ID#SWC-OO-7804)
female orca
She was captured in October 1978 in Iceland
Kasatka is Russian for "orca" or "darling"
Before she moved to SW in June 1979, she lived at Marineland Canada. She has lived at all four sea world parks, including Ohio (now Six Flags), Florida, Texas and her current residence California. She has lived in CA since 1990.
While in CA she has mothered three calves, Takara a 14-year-old female that moved to SWF in April 2004 after spending her entire life with her mother. Kasatka was impregnated with Kotar in Texas and then was transferred to CA where she gave birth to Takara. Nakai was conceived through artificial insemination and was born on September 1, 2001, making Kasatka the first marine mammal to successfully be artificially inseminated. Her most recent calf, Kalia, was born on Dec. 21, 2004 and she was fathered by Keet.
She also became a grandmother when Takara gave birth to her first calf, Kohana, on May 3, 2002. Takara gave birth to her second calf, a male named Trua, on November 23, 2005.
Kasatka is not a very interactive whale with the guests, but she does have her moments. If Takara, Kohana and Nakai are up at the acrylic for long periods of time, Kasatka's curiosity usually gets the best of her, and she will come over to see what all the fuss is about. She will even stay a while and join in the play.
Kasatka is the dominant female at SWC, even though she is one of the smallest females.
Length: a little over 17 feet
Weight: about 5,100 lbs
She looks about the same as Takara. They both have the nick in their dorsal fin, they both have a black dot on their left eye patch, and they are both about the same size.
So you can recognize her:
She has a nick in her left tail fluke. She has three missing teeth on her lower jaw on her right side. Her dorsal fin leans to the left a little, but only slightly.
