Utena has just transferred to a new school. She meets Wakaba who gives her a tour and tells her some of the scoop on who is who on campus till Utena spots an old acquaintance, Touga. She rushes to talk to him. Afterwards, Utena meets Himemiya tending roses in a huge garden. They talk awhile and become fast friends. Saionji arrives and notices Utena with a Rose signet ring. He explains a little about how the people who have rose signet rings are eligible to duel for the possession of the rose bride. Himemiya is the rose bride and that she must do the bidding of the winning duelist. Saionji's attitude and his treatment of Himemiya rub Utena the wrong way and she happily accepts a duel with him. She doesn't have a sword so she uses a wooden shaft that she finds in the garden. The duel begins and Saionji is clearly to much for Utena to handle with out a real sword. Himemiya sees this and offers to Utena a sword that can be magically pulled from her own body. It becomes apparent that Himemiya would rather Utena win the duel. Utena accepts the sword and then takes the battle to Saionji. |

A condensed retelling of the brilliant and entertaining Revolutionary Girl Utena series. Great as a companion to the series. Drawn okay but beautiful at points. As a stand alone movie it is an engaging if somewhat confusing relationship/self examining drama with a little humor here and there. |
