Figure 17

Tsubasa and Hikaru

Genre : Drama / Sci-Fi
Tsubasa is shy little girl with few friends who recently moved to a small town. She would have rather not moved but she is okay with it because it allows her father to pursue a job that he enjoys. DD is a police officer of sorts from another planet. He is chasing a criminal who had stolen the eggs from a monstrous creature. The chase ends on earth where at least one of the eggs has hatched and the criminal is nowhere to found. He tries to fight the creature using a figure suit. A figure suit is a bio/tech device with an advanced AI that surrounds the body and enhances the abilities of the person using it. The battle doesn't go well for him. Not far away, Tsubasa sees some lights in the forest behind her house. Her dog runs off and she chases after him. She finds DD laying wounded on the ground. She tries to shake him awake when the creature that DD was fighting makes her its new target. Tsubasa tries to hide from the creature in DD's ship but the creature follows. She is cornered but nearby is a broken canister containing a figure suit. The suit activates and surrounds Tsubasa. The suit attacks the creature carrying Tsubasa along. The battle isn't going well till the suit asks for and gets Tsubasa's cooperation. Once the creature is defeated, the figure suit was supposed to return to its canister form. Instead, it forms itself into a clone copy of Tsubasa. It has the same memories as Tsubasa up until the point of the copying. The personality is a little different though. Where Tsubasa is shy, Hikaru, who she comes to be called, is very out going. DD wants Hikaru to return to the canister but she wants to remain as a human for awhile. Something about the earth has caused the creatures to mutate into something too powerful for DD to handle alone. He needs Hikaru and Tsubasa's help. It's going to take awhile to finish his job so he uses a memory altering device on Tsubasa's father so he will 'remember' that Tsubasa had a twin sister. Tsubasa gains a friend and twin sister. DD gains a powerful ally in Figure 17.

Review
Scores high in all technical categories. Drawn and animated very well. Great character designs. Very good sound track. As dramas go, Figure 17 is slow paced but engaging as it follows Tsubasa and Hikaru through their daily lives at school and at home. The Sci-Fi and action elements are very good but a little scarce and almost separate. Over all, just shy of excellent. It didn't grab me right away but I liked it more with each episode that I saw.
