The description of a HURRICANE. Hurricanes are violent tropical storms that form over warm ocean waters. Usually starting, off the coast of Africa, these storms drift towards the west, and are fueled by the warm waters of the tropics. The warm, moist air moving in towards the center of the storm, spirals upward, releasing torrential rains. Updrafts suck up more water vapor, constantly building up strength; until it is stopped or weakened by contact with land or cooler water. The eye of the spiraling storm clouds is located in the center of the clouds. The hurricane winds swirl counter-clockwise around the storm's eye at speeds of 74 to 200 miles per hour.
Thursday, August 24, 2000 Biijing-Typhoon Bilis slammed into coastal China on Wednesday, delivering heavy rain and gail-force winds. It devastated homes and killed 11 people.Bilis made landfall in the Fujian province of China on Wednesday afternoon. It fizzled out as it traveled further inland, diminishing to 60 to 70 miles per hour, as reported by a spokesman in the port city Xiamen. The spokesman, Xie said that municipal workers will be keeping a keen watch through the rest of the night for effects of flooding and any damage the torrential rains which are expected to follow the typhoon.

Ten people were reported missing, after they were believed swept away in mudslides in southern Hualien and Kaohsiung counties.Bilis was an exceptionally powerful storm. Gauhati, India-Waterborne diseases and flooding rivers caused by seasonal monsoon rains, have killed at least 70 people, and sickened hundreds in India over the past week, as rerported by news sources and authorities on Friday. A bus with more than 60 passengers were swept away by a swolen Banas River on Friday night in central Madhya Pradesh state. The news agency, Press Trust of India, quoted police as saying that only seven people managed to swim to safety. Rescue efforts have been hampered by continuous rains. In India's northeast flood-ravaged state of Assam, during the past week, 20 people have been made ill by waterborne diseases.

- Gauhati India-Swirling flood waters of the mighty Brahmaputra River submerged the homes of more than two million people; drowning at least 40 of them in India's remote northeast, as reported by a government official on Sunday. Another 35 people died of encephalitis, dysentery and malaria in eastern and northern parts of Assam state in the past two days in the flood-hit villages, a health department official reported. Army and air force helecopters have dropped food, medicine and tents to the hundreds of people stranded on roof tops since Saturday.

CHANDIGARH, IndiaSudden torrential showers in Tibet caused a river to overflow its banks and washing into neighboring India. The surge of water washed away 1000 houses and drowned at least 107 people, as reported by an official on Wednesday.The highest official of the Himachal Pradesh state, expressed that more bodies would be found in the mountain gorges when the water subsides.The state press secretary B.D. Sharma, said that thirty bridges were damaged by rain and flooding along a 180-mile stretch of the Sutlej River. Himachal Pradesh has numerous trekking routs, which is popular with the Western tourists. Trapped at one power plant were 300 workers, which rescue workers were able to evacuate; also at another facility, 20 workers were evacuated, as reported by Negi.

Beijing The death toll in a landslide, triggered by heavy rains in central China, has risen to 213; while landslides have killed 23 people in Western China, as was reported by state media on Thursday. In addition to the 23 killed, large areas of farmland have been heavily damaged. It was also reported that vehicles were buried in the slides. Altogether, at least 681 people have been killed in summer flooding in all of China this year; with the heavy rain now moving into its late-July pinnacle.

Pine Lake,Alberta In Canada, a tornado that tossed trailers into a lake while devastating a crowded campsite, killed nine, sent more than 130 to the hospital and forced 400 to spend the night in temporary shelters, the police reported. Many injured campers; some with broken limbs, wandered in shock; while others frantically searched for missing loved ones, after the twister had left the Green Acres campground by Pine Lake, about 90 miles north of Calgary. On Saturday, divers searched submerged trailers for more victims. Police asked the military for help in checking and clearing wreckage strewn across the hillside campsite and into the lake water.
The injured and displaced were transported to nearby Red Deer, and as far as Calgary and Edmonton, in response to the emergency. The tornado touched down at the campground at about 6:30 p.m., Friday, and lasted for about 20 minutes. The nine dead included a 2-year-old child, and 136 were transported to hospitals in nearby Red Deer, as well as Calgary and Edmonton, the police reported. Victims with less serious injuries were treated at the scene; and 400 people were taken to area shelters for the night.

MOSCOWTorrential rains drenched Moscow for a third day Thursday, turning city streets into violent streams. The thigh-high water caused cars to stall, and drivers wading around in the deluge. Twice the average rainfall deluged Moscow on Wednesday and Thursday alone, as was reported by Alexander Frolov, the head of Russia's meteriological service on RTR television network. Rescuers had to use a boat to evacuate passengers from a bus that was stuck in a central Moscow square, the daily Vremya Novostei reported on Thursday.

CHINA At least 74 people in China's southwest province of Sichuan were killed; and thousands of others were left homeless by devastating mudslides triggered by torrential rain and hail. In the worst hit region of Gulin County, 48 people were killed, and six others were missing; with most of the victims being buried alive, when mudslides covered their homes. The area had been suffering from widespread drought, before the clouds bursted on June 5.

Little Rock, Ark. Thunderstorms and tornadoes damaged homes, and downed trees and power lines in northern Arkansas on Saturday, injuring at least one person. Arkansas State Police said a tornado touched down near Leachville, in the northeast corner of Arkansas. North Carolina- In North Carolina, two people died in the aftermath of storms on Thursday. One man fell from a ladder in Elon College on Thursday, and died of his injuries. Another man in Burlington was killed on Friday by a tree limb while he was cutting trees knocked down by the storms.

DALLAS A quick moving storm spawned tornadoes, high winds and baseball-sized hail from Texas to Michigan on Friday night, killing one person in Texas, and injuring at least one dozen others. A four-year-old Kansas girl died earlier in the day in the aftermath of a tornado. One person died in Hill County, about 60 miles south of Dallas, when a twister touched down on Friday evening, as was reported by Cpl. Charlie Morgan with the Texas Department of Public Safety.. In St. Nazianz, Wis., straight-wind gusts up to 110 miles per hour, and baseball- size hail caused heavy damage to a mobile home park on Friday night, where several people were injured, as reported by Nancy Crowley, Manitowoc County Emergency Government spokeswoman.

-Parsons, Kansas:- A line of severe storms, stretching from Kansas to Missouri, unleashed at least four tornadoes that destroyed homes and businesses, and flattened a carnival. Twenty seven people were treated for injuries; but none were seriously hurt. About ten homes were destroyed, and many others damaged when one tornado hit Parsons on Wednesday night. Damage to a theater, grocery store, a car dealership and other downtown businesses was also very heavy. The fury of the twister knocked out the police 911 system.
On Tuesday, August 22, 1999, Hurricane "Bret" rumbled ashore on the Texas Gulf Coast carrying winds up to 100 miles per hour.

OGLALA, S.D. A tornado ripped through a small town on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, smashing homes, and killing at least one person.
The twister struck Oglala on Friday evening, as violent thunderstorms rolled across the region of mostly open prairie in southwestern South Dakota. A car was seen spinning in circles. About 20 homes, a church and a church hall were destroyed; and 50 houses were damaged, as reported by Gene Abdallah, superintendent of the state Highway Patrol. Violent thunderstorms, baseball-size hail, high winds and at least four tornadoes rolled across the southern part of the state on Saturday. No major injury or damage was reported. Because of the bad weather, National Guard members were sent out to Oglala; and the town was evacuated for an hour on Saturday night. The main concern of Governor Bill Janklow, was finding temporary housing for people who would need a place to sleep. About 100 people had spent the Friday night at thr Pine Ridge High School. They were expected to spend Saturday night there as well. On Friday night, the wind gusted to 70 mph west of Oglala, near Oelrichs; and 2 to 3 inches of rain fell in an hour elsewhere in the region.

LONDON On Wednesday, a sudden squall struck a fleet of small boats racing off the southern coast of England, capsizing seventy eight vessels, and setting off an air-sea rescue that helped save all 156 sailors from the rough waters. A 37-year-old woman was hospitalized for hypothermia, as was reported by police. The race began in calm weather. Had it not been for the quick and decisive efforts of the rescuers, it could have been a major disaster.

FORT WORTH, TEXAS On Tuesday, a tornado devastated downtown Fort Worth; shattering windows in high-rise buildings, overturning cars--and uprooting trees. Four people were killed; and at least 36 were injured. The tornado hit shortly after 6:30 p.m., amid severe thunderstorms that were accompanied by torrential rains, softball size hail and strong winds. Two people died in the tornado, and two others died in the resulting flooding caused by the tornado, as was reported by Lt. Kent Worley, a spokesman for the Fort Worth Fire Department.

CAMILLA, Ga. Tornadoes descended on rural Georgia early Monday, lifting people from their beds, and piling up mobile homes. At least 22 people were killed, and more than 100 were hurt. Dozens of houses and mobile homes in the southwest town of Camilla were flattened; their metal and siding, mangled and strewn across yards and streets. The tornado struck shortly after midnight, as a line of thunderstorms rumbled through the Southwest, scarring property from Arkansas to Georgia. Authorities in Camilla and sorrounding Mitchell County, said two separate twisters cut a 1.5-mile-wide, 10-mile-long path through the county. Fourteen people died in Mitchell County---a primary rural area dotted with cotton and peanut farms, textile factories and state prison. Seven people died in neighboring Grady County, and one in Colquitt County.

Sunday, January 26, 1997- -NASHVILLE, Tenn- Thousands were without electricity on Saturday, after tornadoes rushed through central Tennessee and part of Alabama; killing one person, destroying and damaging more than 200 homes and businesses.Barfield, a tiny community just southeast of Nashville, was hardest hit by the twisters and thunderstorms that rolled through the areas last Friday.An emergency agency official, reported that half of 75 to 80 homes were destroyed. Most of the units of the large amount of apartment complexes in the twister's path were extensively damaged, as was reported by an official of the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency.The twisters skipped through nine counties in central Tennessee and an adjacent part of Alabama.
- -SAN FRANCISCO-Heavy rain over northern California caused mudslides and swelled rivers on Saturday; raising the possibility of renewed flooding after the devastating floods earlier this month.The second Pacific storm this week, broke over northern California overnight. Early Saturday, the rain eased, but more heavy rains were forcast through the weekend.The region has not yet recovered from New Year's floods, that caused at least $1.5-billion in damages. Flood warnings were in effect for the Russian and Napa rivers in the wine county, which were expected to exceed flood stage later Saturday.
On June 5, 1995, Hurricane Allison buffeted the Golf Coast with seventy five miles per hour winds, inundating streets and setting off tornadoes; but causing no major damage.
On February 16, 1995, four people were killed when tornadoes tore through rural north Alabama.
-HAITI, August 5- In 1980, Hurricane Allen battered the southern peninsula of Haiti, leaving more than 200 dead after the destruction.
In July 20, 1977, a flash flood hit Johnstown, Pennsylvania; killing 80 people, and causing $350 million in damage.
On August 17, 1969, Hurricane Camille killed 248 people when it slammed into the Golf Coast.
