A magnitude-6 earthquake can cause severe damage if it is centered under a populated area. Magnitude-7 indicates a major earthquake, which is capable of widespread and devastating damage. Since the start of 1990, the National Seismological Service of Mexico has recorded 38 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.
