~Important facts~

On April 18, 1978, the U.S. Senate voted 68-32 to turn the Panama Canal over to Panamanian control on December 31, 1999.

Sunday, August 15, 1999, marked the 85th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal; the last commemoration before Panama takes control of the waterway. Under a 1977 agreement, the United States will cede the control of the canal and its facilities to Panama on December 31st; ending its military presence in the Central American country. Panama has already taken control of most canal functions.

On July 31, 1981, the leader of Panama,
Omar Torrijos, died in a plane crash.

On Tuesday, July 11, 1934, Franklin
Roosevelt became the first U.S. president
to travel through the Panama Canal.

On September 2, 1901, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt offered the advice; "Speak softly and carry a big stick," in a speech at the Minnesota State Fair.
