PARIS-Five people were killed, and one was seriously injured on Wednesday, after a group of skiers was caught in an avalanche in the Hautes-Alpes region of southeastern France, as reported by police. Another skier was unhurt, when the avalanche buried the group of seven skiers above the Prapic ski station. The uninjured skier managed to alert rescue services, who later found five bodies. All of the victims were adults who lived in the immediate area.

NEW DELHI, INDIA-Rescue workers used great effort to reach a rain-soaked region where 27 people were killed in landslides and flooding, as reported by officials on Friday. Blocked roads hampered the rescue efforts.Torrential rain caused several landslides on Wednesday in two districts in the mountainous Kumaon region in the northern Uttar Pradesh state. Informtion from the romote area reached the Indian capital on Friday. Due to the vastness of the landslide, it was difficult to locate the bodies.

SAULO, Brazil-Mudslides, caused by four days of torrential rain have killed at least 20 people in northeastern Brazil; and forced close to 10,000 others to abandon their homes, as reported by civil defense and media on Tuesday. Fourteen victims were buried under tons of mud that collapsed homes that were located precariously on the hills in and near Recife, the capital of Pernambuco state, located 1,300 miles northeast of Sao Paulo.Rain continued to fall, and more mudslides were expected as a result of the continued rainfall, said civil defense official, Carlos D'Alburquerque in Recife.

CARACAS, Venezuela-Bad weather forced rescuers on Monday, to halt rescue efforts by helicopter in their search for five mountain climbers swept away by an avalanche on one of the highest peaks of Venezuela. Soon after the avalanche, rescuers found one survivor; and were continuing their search of Humboldt Peak on foot. However, as reported by Armando Abreu, Civil Defense chief; the rains continued to slow down effective rescue efforts in the western state of Merida. It was the worst climbing accident in the history of the mountain. The climbers were students at Merida's University of the Andes. All were experienced mountain climbers, as was ascertained by Abreu.

Ayacucho, Peru-A landslide of mud and rock swept through an isolated village in the southern Andes of Peru, killing a reported 22 villagers, as reported by authorities on Friday. The situation occured late on Thursday when the rain soaked slopes of a low-lying mountain ridge eventually gave way; and releasing an avalanche that traveled more than a mile at very high speed, before striking the small community of Uralla, located 190 miles south of the capital, Lima.Civil defense teams rushed to the village on Friday with medicine, food and blankets for the survivors, as reported by Ernesto Molina Chavez, a regional administrator in the highland city of Huancavelica, located 40 miles northwest of the community.
