Kids Rule!

Thanks to the baby boom, a significant portion of the population was now under 12 years old. As a result, society became more "child-oriented."

Shopping centers and amusement parks installed kiddie lands, complete with scaled-down carnival rides. Kids could watch TV shows and listen to record albums made especially for them. On TV, commercials that were once aimed at adults now featured cute cartoon characters and were designed to appeal to children.

And the toys! Cowboy toys, space toys, dolls, coloring books...kids had more toys to choose from in the 50's than ever before! Most parents had grown up during the Depression, and were eager to provide their children with all the things they didn't have when they were young.

Kids had it made!
