AVALOKITESHVARA

Homage to Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara

Bodhisattva Guan Yin (Chinese)
Bodhisattva Chenrezig (Tibetan)
Bodhisattva Kannon (Japanese)

Avalokiteshvara is among the most widely and deeply renowned Buddhist devotional figures. A bodhisattva, or being of vast wisdom committed to achieving buddhahood, Avalokiteshvara is viewed as specializing particularly in the practice of compassion; for this reason, he is often called the Bodhisattva of Compassion. He appears as the central figure in the Heart of Perfect Wisdom Sutra. Avalokiteshvara is also viewed as the patron of the Tibetan people, and is associated specifically with the Dalai Lama.
The name Avalokiteshvara means "the lord who looks down," in the sense that Avalokiteshvara is constantly bearing witness to the sorrows, dangers, and distress of all living beings. In Chinese, he is called "Guan Yin" and is often depicted as a woman.
