The becoming of life in samsara
by His Holiness the fourteenth Dalai Lama
At the
moment of conception, the being passes through seven phases of dying
in reverse order:
7. vivid
black mind-sky
6. vivid red-orange mind-sky
5. vivid white mind-sky
4. flame of a lamp
3. fireflies
2. smoke
1. mirage

There
are different explanations for how the being enters the womb.
Some texts say it is by entering into the male's mouth or top
of head and passing through his body and phallus into the female's
womb. Other texts say that the being enters directly through the
female's vagina into the womb.
A
person with virtue predominating will have a sense of entering
into a pleasant house and hearing pleasant sounds. A person dominated
by non-virtue will have a sense of entering into a swamp or dark
forest in the midst of raucous clamor.

| The
very subtle wind and mind of the being enters the material (egg
and sperm) contributed by the parents. In the fetus, which at this
time is the size of a large mustard seed, the central channel forms
with the right and the left channels circling in three times. Then
the upward-moving wind and downward-voiding wind move in their respective
directions and the three channels become extended. |

The
body gradually develops and eventually emerges from the womb.
