"Jordyn, get up!"

I rolled over in my bed to get a good veiw of the clock. It read 8:00 a.m. I sat bolt up right in my bed. I had overslept!

"Jordyn come on!" came my mom's voice from downstairs.

"Coming!" I yelled back.

Hastily, I jumped out of bed, grabbed the sheets of my bed and made my bed. I then quickly changed from my pajamas into some clothes. Nothing fancy, just a plain pair of shorts and a blue shirt and a blue and white cap. I brushed my long red hair back into a pony tail and slipped my hat on. I reached back and pulled my ponytail through the back of the cap. Then I ran to my chest of drawers and grabbed my socks. After I had slipped my feet in my socks I ran out of the room, down the hallway, and practically flew down the stairs, taking them 3 steps at a time.

" Hi, Hon," my mom said as I entered the kitchen.

"Hi, Mom," I replied," sorry, gotta eat fast. I accidentally overslept." I said as I sat down at the table.

" OK, Honey, but why the rush?"

"Mom!" I said loudly," today I get my first pokemon!"

"Oh!" said my mom," that's right I forgot. Which one will you choose?"

" I think I'll get Torchic." I said thoughtfully through a mouth full of toast that I found on the table.

I crammed the last of my food down and I ran back upstairs and into my room. I grabbed my backpack that contained my art supplies, my money, some extra food, some clothes, and some other things I thought might be useful on my journey.I then ran back downstairs and slipped on my shoes.

" Bye, Mom," I said," I gotta go."

"Bye, Jordyn," she said, " I'll miss you." It must of just now sunk in that I was leaving because my mom's usually happy blue eyes got misty and I could tell she was trying hard not to cry. She flung her arms around my saying," Be carefull and take care of yourself."

" I will ,Mom," I replied," Good-bye."

I ran to the door leaving my mom waving and and telling me what not to do. I ignored this and stepped out of the door into the fresh air of New Bark Town.

As I stepped outside a cool breeze hit me pushing my ponytail back behind my head. I took a deep breath before cotinuing on my way to Professor Birch's lab.

I was so happy , today was my thirteenth birthday. I very badly wanted a Torchic for my first pokemon. Ever since a Blaziken had saved me from a pack of wild Houndour about five years ago, I had wanted a Torchic so I could raise it to be as powerful as the one that saved me.

As I reached the lab the door burst open. Out came an angry looking girl. She had shoulder length brown hair and a green outfit with matching earrings. She kept huffing and puffing on by me, not even looking my way.

"Hello, Jordyn," said a confused looking Prof. Birch as he stared at the back of the angry girl,"please excuse Annie, my niece, she can be overly emotional sometimes."

"Yes,"I began," um....but I um...." I struggled to find the right words.

" Ah yes," The Prof. said," you want your pokemon." I nodded. "I'm sorry," he said "they are not here yet. That's why Annie stormed out of here."

"Oh," my face fell. I admit I was disapointed. I had been waiting for this day my whole life and now, I would have to wait some more.

"But don't worry,he assured me," they will be here soon. "computer was messed up so they couldn't get through."

"OK," my face brightened a little," how long will it take?"

" Hm..." he paused thoughtfully," probably thirty minutes or so. You can stay while you wait."

"Thanks," I said as I stepped into the lab.

Prof. Birch's lab was big. It had tile flooring with grey walls. There were complicated looking gadget's and machines in some places.

I saw the computer repair man bent over the computer hard at work. You would think that they would have more than one computer.I looked around the room at all the flashing buttons. It was very tempting to reach out a touch one, but I restrained myself.

"Would you like some Apple Cider while you wait?" said the Prof.

"Sure," I replied.

He walked over to one of the less complicated looking machines, pressed a button and out popped a little, steaming cup of Cider.

"Thanks," I said as Prof. Birch walked back over to me, handing me the cup. It was too hot to drink right now so I fumbled in my backpack and pulled out a thermos. I poured the cider in for later.

"Oh!" said Birch,"I almost forgot." He hurried away into a corner of the lab with a table there. He picked up a red device I had never seen before, and walked over to me.

"Here," he said handing me the red thingy. At my bewhildered look he laughed and said," I'm sorry, I never told you what it is. This is a Pokedex. You point it at a pokemon and it will tell you a little bit about the pokemon and record that you have seen it."

"Oh," I said happily," thanks! It's really cool."

A little while later from somewhere in the room, I heard a groan as the computer repair man straightened up and said," Finally. OK ,Professor, I'm done."

"Thanks," said the prof. as he walked over to the man and gave him the money.

Soon the repair man had packed up his things and said good-bye before waking out the door.

The Prof. walked over to the computer and sat for a minute, doing something on it."Ah- ha!" he said, "there we go."

A machine I hadn't noticed until now started making noises and glowing. Then out of the top popped a pokeball.

The Prof. picked it up and handed it to me and said," Here is your pokemon. I don't know if it is the one you wanted , but it was the only one available.

I gulped. What if it wasn't a Torchic? I had thought I would get to choose. I stared down at the ball clutched in my hand. 'Please,' I begged it silently,'please be a Torchic!'

"Go , Pokeball!" I shouted as I threw the ball into the air. A red beam of light came out of the pokeball and out popped the cutest pokemon I had ever seen.
“Torchic-tor! ” I looked at the cute bird pokemon standing in front of me. It had yellow and orange feathers on top of it’s head and on it’s wings, with orange everywhere else. It’s long yellow feet, ending in sharp talons, were much to big for it’s body, along with it’s adorable head. It had a happy expression on it’s face and always seemed to be doing a little dance of happiness.
“It’s adorable!” I blurted out.
“Well, I’m glad you like it,” Prof. Birch said, grinning, “it’s a boy.”
“Aww!” I ran over to my new friend and picked him up as if he were made of glass.
“Tor!” He said flapping his wings a little.
I was about to burst I was so happy. I had wanted a Torchic for so long and now I was holding one in my arms. I loved it. And the best thing was, it loved me back.
“Thank you!” I said running to Prof. Birch and giving him a big hug, “ thank you, thank you, thank you!”
“Um,” he said, a little startled, “you’re welcome.”
Torchic was squealing and jumping up and down as if to say, “Group hug!”
I pulled away and started dancing around with Torchic.
“Ahem, uh, Jordyn?”
I froze in the middle of spinning and lost my footing, resulting in my crashing to the floor.
Torchic let out a little, “Tor!” from being startled, and I said, “Oops!”
“Are you OK?” Prof Birch said, extending a hand.
“Fine,” I said taking his hand and I was pulled to my feet.
“What I was going to say was that you’ll probably need these,” He reached into his pocket and produced five pokeballs.
“Thanks!” I said taking them out of his hand, “OK, well, I might as well be going. Anything else I need to know?”
Prof. Birch laughed and said, “Well, you are eager. Nope! You are all set!”
“OK!” I said, wheeling around to head for the door,” I’ll see you when I’ve beaten the Elite Four and I’m a Pokemon Master!” And with that I burst out of the door, not even looking back on the life I’d lived just five minutes ago. It was just me and Torchic now.
“What should I call you?” I asked the bird pokemon sitting in my arms, “how ‘bout …… Blaze?”
He sat for a minute with a thoughtful look on his face. Then he turned his head to mine and let out a, “Tor!” showing his approval.
“Well then,” I said, half laughing, “Blaze it is!”
I turned and looked at the small town of Littleroot before I started on my way to the next town.
“So, Blaze,” I said entering Route 101,” do you think we’ll find any good pokemon here?”
“Torchic!” he replied, pointing with one of his little wings to a small dog/raccoon looking creature that was sniffing around a bush.
“Oh, wow!” I said, “Wonder what it is.”
I looked around. There were several other pokemon just like the first, but out of all of them Blaze had picked this one.
“Tor!” Blaze climbed onto my shoulder and stuck his head into my backpack. I held very still not wanting him to fall. Then Blaze came back up, holding my pokedex.
“Oh, right! I forgot.” I held my hand out and Blaze dropped the pokedex into it.
I pointed my pokedex at the pokemon and it sprang open.
Zigzagoon: The tinyracoon pokemon,
Rubbing its nose against the ground, it always wanders back and forth in search of something. It is distinguished by the zigzag footprints it leaves,” Reported the pokedex.
“Oh, cool.” I whispered, “You wanna help me catch it?” I paused, “Hm, I don’t like the sound of that. How about helping me become friends with it?” I looked at Blaze and he returned my gaze as if to say, “Much better!”
“OK, let’s go.”
Slowly we crept close to the zigzagoon. It was doing just what the pokedex said. It was pacing back and forth, looking as if it’s nose was glued to the ground.
I stood up and the zigzagoon looked startled and tried to run, but I yelled, “Blaze, use Ember!”
Blaze leaped from my shoulder and blocked the zigzagoon’s only escape route, then let out a powerful Ember.
The zigzagoon was blown off it’s feet. It landed with a thud about five feet away, the tips of its fur singed. It immediately leaped back up and used quick-attack.
“He’s got spunk,” I said surprised.
Blaze stood his ground but was pushed a little ways back. Being able to keep his footing was good, he could retaliate quickly.
“Blaze, use Scratch!” I yelled.
Blaze obeyed quickly and jumped up, raking his talons down Zigzagoon’s side. It let out a yelp and fell backwards.
I was just about to pull out a pokeball when the zigzagoon heaved itself up and attempted another quick-attack but couldn’t make it and collapsed to the ground, panting.
“You really do have spunk,” I said in awe.
I ran up to Ziggy ( decided to name it that) and knelt down, “I really didn’t want to hurt you but I had no choice.” I looked at the side where Blaze had scratched him and said, “ that looks pretty deep, we need to get you to a Pokemon Center. I’ll transport you there in this.” I pulled out a pokeball. Then I backed up and enlarged it, “Go, pokeball!” I yelled throwing my pokeball at Ziggy. The red beam of light came out of the pokeball and Ziggy was sucked inside. The pokeball landed softly on the ground and lay still.
“Yes!”
