- Second successful orca born through artificial insemination.
- Born tail first at 20:30 PDT.
- 100% Icelandic orca.

HISTORY

Kohana was born on May 3, 2002, to first time Mom, Takara. Kohana is the second orca to be concieved and born through artificial insemination (AI). Her father is Tilikum, who lives at the Florida park. Kohana is the first Grandbaby Shamu to be born at SeaWorld San Diego.

A poll was taken to see what the little girl would be named. The choices were: Kohana (Japanese for "little flower"), Tsunami (Japanese for "tidal wave"), Miyoko (Japanese for "beautiful generation child"), Nyoko (Japanese for "gem"), Aiko (Japanese for "beloved"), and Kuni (Japanese for "queen").

She was a shy calf, but as the months passed, she came to enjoy interacting with visitors in the Close Up exhibit with her mother and other relatives.

On April 24, 2004, Kohana and Takara were sent to SeaWorld Orlando. Kohana and her mother seemed to adjust well. Kohana loved playing with her half-siblings, Ikaika and Skyla.

On February 13, 2006, Kohana, Tekoa, Keto, and Skyla were transferred to Loro Parque in Tenerife, Spain.
