Sat 30-08-03 : INTER 3 - Bradninch 3 - 2 North Tawton Reserves

Bradninchs first competitive match of the season saw last seasons Inter 4 champions come to town. North Tawton and Bradninch have had some fantastics battles down the seasons and this was to be no exception. Niether team played to the best of their abilities and at times the game was down right scrappy. Gary Aldridge was making his competitative debut for Bradninch. It was the home team that took the lead after about 20 minutes, somewhat against the run of play when Steve Roach completed a swift counter attack, sliding the ball under the on rusing goalie and into the net. Steve Trump doubled the Bradninch lead when he found the ball at his feet on the 6 yard line and managed to bumble it into the corner past the hesistant North Twaton goal keeper. After the change around the battle continued, neither team really dominating. With 50 minutes gone Jonny Reed entered the fray replacing Ricky Browning. North Tawton struck back with a well taken shot from 20 yards that looped over stranded stopper Stuart Murray to make it 2-1 and that was followed not long after by a Bradninch corner. It was Gavin White whole flighted the ball into the back post where the towering Mike Cooke thumped a header into the Tawton net. Bradninchs two goal lead was restored. From there on in the match belonged to North Tawton. A mix up in the Bradninch defence saw keeper Stuart Murray and goalscorer Mike Cooke collide going for the same ball and a North Tawton striker knocking the ball into the net. 3-2 and game on. Manager Martin Goldworthy was not here to see this match, so it was stand in manager Steve Trump who took the choice to go 5 at the back bringing himself off and putting Dave Browning on. Trumpys said he made the formation change because Bradninch were getting "Steamrollered". At that was certainly true, but for two fantastic goal line clearances by Nicky Ball the score would have been equal. Bradninchs Mark Blatchford was the best player on the pitch over the 90 mins running the midfield and having several good shots from long range, including a free kick that was tipped over the bar. Bradninch didn't play there best football today, but on the opening day of the season against last seasons champs the three points was greatfully recieved.

Sat 23-08-03 : FRIENDLY - Bradninch 2 - 9 Uploman

It was a Bradninch XI that turned up to this match, but it is unlikely to be the 11 that are on the pitch for the kickoff of the season in 7 days. The team consisted of just 5 of the players that started on thursday night against Twyford, plus 3 players that had never even been training for the club before. Bradninch had no recognised goalkeeper, 3 players under 18 , only 1 sub and just about everybody playing out of position. It was unsurprising then when, by 5pm they had been pretty much been played off the park. Bradninchs goals came from Brad Goldsworthy and makeshift centre back Ricky Browning. Jordan Palk took the role of goalie in the second half and dispite a good performance could do little to avert the nine goal demolition handed out to this rookie Bradninch team. Bradninchs team included 3 new members, former Kentisbeare manager Gary Aldridge and father and son duo Mark and Andy Greenwood. It was a good run out for all who participated, but a long way from being a true mark of where Bradninch are in reality. Expect a very different show when North Tawton come to Kensham Avenue next weekend.

Thu 21-08-03 : FRIENDLY - Bradninch 3 - 1 Twyford Spartans Under 17s

The Bradninch team were expecting a busy workout against the quick and fit youngsters and at spells thats what they got. The Tiverton youth team had great abiliy and skill to go with their young quick legs. But it was Bradninchs experience and knowhow that won this match. The kids were out knowledged by a dogged Brads team who worked hard to give the Spartans no time on the ball to use their quick feet. 15 mins had gone when the Spartans goalie thrashed a wild clearance at Steve Trump, who in turn knocked the ball back over his head into the net, only for it to be harshly ruled out for hand ball. With 25 minutes on Steve Roach scored Bradninchs first of the season with a looping lob over the short Twyford goalkeeper. Thats how it finished at half time. Steve Roach got his and Bradninchs 2nd with a rare header past the on coming goalie. Not long after Mark Blatchford slid the ball through between the away defence for Steve Roach to slid home and complete an impresive hatrick. The bright Twyford number 9, rumoured to be on the books for Plymouth Argyle, was carried off the pitch 10 mins from time when a firm solid challenge from Andrew Olsen went through both the ball and the man. With two minutes left on the clock a Twyford corner was thrashed into the Bradninch area and the referees wistle sounded. He pointed to the spot after he had spotted a dubious tussle between Graham and a Spartan attacker. The Spot kick was dispatched into the net to give the kids at least a goal to take home. The Bradninch team played well in there first game back with more than a few regulars missing. Mike Cooke missing out with a slight knock, Paul Cudmore watching on the sideline on crutches. Nick Acton, Sam Smith, Gavin and Ian White all not available.
