We are happy to let you know that on April 3, 2002 Alexei & Natalia Koudinov got the prize 2001 for the best basic science work in medicine for the last five years. The prize was awarded on March 25, 2002 by the presidium of Academy Members of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, the major medical sciences body of the Russian Federation. The award project (entitled "The role for brain cholesterol metabolism disturbances in the development of Alzheimer's disease") was presented last year as a teaching session at the Society for Neuroscience Meeting 2001 and is published as a full size article. The project background research was published as letter to Science, and was additionally recognised by Science magazine that named Natalia Koudinova a finalist in Pharmacia Biotech and Science Magazine Prize for Young Scientists Competition 1997. The prize diplomas and the gold medals were presented on April 3, 2002 at the LXXIV General Meeting of the Academy right after the opening ceremony and the plenar presentation of Professor Y. L. Shevchenko, the Secretary of Health of the Russian Federation. The associated monetary award will
finance Drs. Koudinov just launched novel international scholar educational
initiative, the journal Neurobiology
of Lipids.
