The 3rd Litter: The Whelping
|
|
Matza gave birth to five nearly identical puppies early Sunday morning between 4:45 and 7:15 AM. Her listlessness and heavy breathing woke us from a light sleep because we had been expecting the puppies since the previous Tuesday. It was difficult to tell whether she was in labor or if the panting was her typical reaction to the local wildlife passing by outside the house at night.
After each puppy arrives and gets a cleaning, Momma takes a break
|
Half an hour passed between the arrival of each puppy, giving Momma plenty of time to clean each one and take a breather before the next newborn decided to appear. Each package arrives wet, wrapped up in a dark delicate balloon. The sheer sausage like membrane easily rips opens like a nylon stocking and dissolves on Momma's tongue as she cautiously releases the umbilical cord. She licks away the moisture and liberates the puppies who are surprisingly dry in just a few minutes.

Little squeaky toys filled the air with their newfound voices. The mother opens up their nostrils with her tongue, breathing a new life and independence into her offspring. They squirmed and squealed for the warmth of their mother and her refreshingly nutritional milk.

After the cleaning and feeding, when the puppies were finally all dry and their stomachs fully fed for the first time, Matza was able to take a brief bathroom break while the newborns were quietly asleep. |

Drained and disheveled,

Momma Matza still finds the strength to sit up and nurse her whelplings.

My Puppies do not have their tails docked. The tail is an important communication tool.
