Meet the Mother, Matza

 |
Matza was born on August 28, 1999, in Bellflower, California to AKC registered purebred Yorkshire Terrier parents. Her adult body has a very firm build with a hearty appetite. She carries a long thick torso on short sturdy legs. Matza maintains an eleven to thirteen pound weight, which exceeds the ideal seven pound maximum weight limit for a purebred Yorkshire. Her bulk provides another warm soft pillow for when she sleeps against you, which is often. At the same time, you can get a starling surprise when a bowling ball suddenly lands in your lap and starts licking your face. |
|
You'd think that Matza couldn't run very fast or jump too high because of her short legs. However, her compact and powerful legs propel her mass like a ball being hurled down a bowling lane. When she's determined and wants to run, there's no catching her. She's also learned to use her mass and speed as an offensive weapon. Bisket and Max frequently jump aside to let her pass. If she can't easily jump over an obstacle, she'll use the strength in her front legs to grab and launch her over the ledge. She is a force to be reckoned with. |

Matza is a true love bug. She has no fear and will offer up her affection to anybody and everybody whether they ask for it or not. I have to keep a tight leash on her because she becomes reckless when the excitement at meeting others causes her to race away from me, throwing all caution to the wind.
Despite her abundance of love, at times, Matza does have a jealous streak. Just try to give me a hug. She is smart enough to realize that she can't do anything about it, but if another small dog is standing close enough, watch out! Max or Bisket often become innocent bystanders to Matza's wrath if they are nearby.

Matza gets a hernia
A lump on her lower abdomen turned out to be a hiatial hernia, where the muscle separates and allows the intestines to hang through. Matza got to wear the cone for two weeks while she healed from the operation.
Think I can pick up the Hubble Satellite with this thing? |

She held her head high, keeping the cone head from slowing her down |

Matza, beware the Devil Dog
During the day Matza is a calm affectionate animal, as loving and sweet as she can be. When the sun goes down she transforms into the "Devil Dog". An occasional soft grunt is followed by a low purring growl in the dead of night. After several soothing half waking dream like growls, there's a starling slap in the face. We're suddenly wide awake as she trampolines off the bed, loudly barking and growling all the way to the doggy door. While the local squirrels, mice and possums were quiet enough to only rarely upset her, the recent arrival of coyotes in the neighborhood has her extremely on edge. She's seen and heard the coyotes so often now that she is on guard every night. Her dedication and protective instincts are very admirable but I long for a full nights sleep. Our future landscaping plans include a six foot tall fence up the hill from our back yard to help keep out the intruders. |
