Animal Shelters and Rescue Centers
When you begin your search for a possible new pet you should start at the animal shelter. Do not rush into a decision concerning a new family pet. If you are not that particular about the type, size, age or temperament of your pet, and you are not interested in a show dog, then your local animal shelter may be able to help you. There are many abandoned animals that could use a good home and they can usually be found at your local shelter. The cost for adopting an abandoned or homeless animal will be considerably less than buying from a specialized breeder. While most dogs in the shelter are likely to be larger animals, smaller dogs may also become available. While deciding on a pet, it would serve you well to be patient and check back with the shelter over a few months before finalizing your choice. This will give you time to research the different types of dogs and maybe find an orphaned animal that really does need a new home. If you already know the breed of dog you want for a pet, first try contacting a rescue group for that breed. You could find an older dog that will already be house trained and you'll avoid the frustrating chore of potty training a young new puppy.

Ownership Responsibilities
Owning and becoming a guardian to an animal encompasses many responsibilities that most people probably don't ever consider before looking for a pet. There are many financial obligations and unexpected expenses involving feeding, health care, property damage and boarding. You could find yourself spending more for your pet's medications than you do for your own. How do you plan to deal with your puppy when, as an adult, the dog's personality changes and becomes incompatible with other family members and neighbors. While the animal is just that, a dog, it is still a family member and should be treated as such. If you plan to treat your pet like a dog, and not treat it as you would any other family member, then you should reconsider even getting a pet in the first place.
