Their 2nd Litter: The Whelping October 9, 2002

The inflatable swimming pool where Matza nested with her first litter was set up a week early. After a little exploration Matza recognized the baby pool and even occasionally began resting there.

The puppies were born between 8 and 11 PM on Wednesday evening, October 9, 2002. Momma Matza began nesting mid afternoon. Two boys emerged between 8 PM and 8:30 PM. The remaining three puppies showed up after 10 PM with the two girls arriving last. All the puppies arrived safe and sound, like little squeaky toys looking for food.

I'm a Dad!
Bisket checks on
his new offspring

Daddy Bisket realized exactly what was happening. As he peered over the edge of the baby pool where Matza was having the litter, he stood tall with his chest proudly pushed outward. Bisket's tail was firmly erect, swishing rapidly back and forth with excitement. Bisket would do his little dance, half scratching the carpet and half jumping backwards. All the while he could hardly contain his enthusiasm, looking around the room at us and barking to announce his fatherhood.

Of course, Matza would have none of it. When she saw Bisket get close to the nest, a deep growl would begin to gurgle forth. Not just a typical angry type growl, but a depth charged maternal growl from fathoms below, a growl that would even stop Satan dead in his tracks! Bisket knew to stay a safe distance but it didn't stop him from watching the delivery with devoted interest.

Don't even think about it!

After just one warning from Momma, Max decided to watch from across the room. Not understanding that he has new brothers and sisters, Max tried to sneak a peek when the Mom and pups were relatively quiet and he thought it was safe. Inching closer, Max stretched his neck as far forward as possible. He sniffed and tried to catch a whiff, as he attempted to see his newborn siblings.

Matza guards her one week old pups

Matza's maternal instincts immediately kicked in. Instead of following me around everywhere I went she abandoned her usual routine to care for her newborn puppies. Keeping the puppies safe, clean and well fed became her priorities. When the puppies were silently sleeping Matza would take a quick bathroom break or make a brief visit for some affection. She wouldn't stay long though and immediately rushed back to safeguard her babies.
