Midleton Writers Group was founded in 1975, when a student at the local Community College (or Technical School, as it was known then) who was an ardent short story writer, could find no outlet, or audience, for her work. To assist her, her teacher enlisted the help of members of the Shanagarry Art Group, who gallantly came to the rescue. Thanks to members of the Licensed Vintners Trade in the town, the group were provided with free accommodation for their meetings, a practice that prevailed until very recently, when the group moved to their present location. The student, whose literary ambitions led to the foundation of the group is now married and has left the town. Many others have come and gone over the years, some to their eternal reward, but enough members still remain to ensure that this twenty-five-year-old organisation is still alive and thriving. Many members have had their work published in various periodicals, local and national, and the group has published several anthologies over the years. Since 1998, a magazine of members works, past and present, has been compiled monthly, and circulated privately among the members, one copy being presented each month to the library. This web site went online in October 2000, to chronicle events in the life of the group, to gather together the addresses of competions and markets that may be of use to the members, to present a new platform for their writing, and provide links to other literary web sites. On November 10, 2000, the group was given a civic reception by Midleton Urban District Council, in recognition of its achievements, where each member of the group was presented with a scroll. At present, the group meets on the first Thursday of every month in The Courtyard Craft Centre, off the Main Street, Midleton. |
