| 15.January.2005 This year has already been a busy one of visitors to the farm, with Todd Anderson and family staying before the Canterbury Ram Fair, as well as our many flock ram clients visiting, and Graeme Hooper and his daughter Jane visiting from the Clear Hills Southdown Stud,Victoria, Australia. While in NZ, principally to see the NZ rams on offer at the sale, they stayed with Bill and Margaret in Timaru. Jane has now become an enigma, having twice visited NZ and brought excellent weather with her. After record rainfalls throughout rural NZ for January, Jane's arrival heralded four days of temperatures eventually making it into the 30s and allowing a rapid increase in hay making everywhere. The Canterbury Stud Ram & Ewe Fair has just been held on the 13th of January, and Chris (as well as the rest of the family) was stoked when Tasvic Downs 4/03 was sold to Todd Anderson's Tralee Downs Stud for a new world record price of $16000. Chris also sold rams at $4800 and $4500 as well as selling all the other rams and ewes on offer. It wasn't one way traffic however as Chris purchased a ram for $8000 from Tralee Downs, which interestingly enough has the same number as the record setting ram he sold (ie 4/03). You can read about the sale on the southdown sheep articles pages. 15.November.2004 For those of you who check here regularly, you will have realised that it seems as though nothing has been happening. Well, actually plenty has been happening, but nothing has been written! Chris recently judged at the 2004 Commercial Romney Farmer of the Year, which was won by Southland farmer Adrian Lawson. An article about Adrian appears in the latest issue (circa Nov 9th) of the Straight Furrow magazine, or you can read an excerpt and link to the full article by going to my "Blogs" in the menu to the left.
More photos will be added soon from the show 30.May.2004 Recently the Central Southdown Breeders Club held a field day at Colin Smith's Bankhead property to discuss future trends in the southdown breed in relation to breed type, the impact of yield grading, and also had presentations from prominent former breeders David Wyllie and Bill Medlicott on the influence of the ewe in your bloodlines, and how to more successfully market your flock rams. read about the field day here >> 11.March.2004
Once again I have been slow in updating the news from the farm. I don't
know whether to blame the heat of January or the wind and rain of February,
but we now appear to be back on a 'normal' weather pattern. 20.January.2004 Read the article about Chris and his record prices published in the Timaru Herald today article pages >> 16.
January. 2004 Well the annual Canterbury Stud Ram &
Ewe Fair has been and gone once again, with 25 of the 46 rams on offer
selling at auction. Sales were well spread among the vendors, with Colin
Smith's Bankhead 144/02 topping the sale at $12500.00. This ram had
previously been the Champion Meat Breed Hogget at the Canterbury A&P
Show. Medlicott Southdowns sold four of the rams and nine of the ewes
we had on offer and details about these sales can be found on the Stud
Sales page >> Although not as successful as previous years Medlicott
Southdowns did manage to set a new NZ record for a ewe which sold for
$2600.00 8. January. 2004 A new year ushers in another Ram Fair, and once again Medlicott Southdowns will be on offer at the annual Canterbury Stud Ram & Ewe Fair on Thursday 15th January. There will be seven rams and ten ewes on offer and Tasvic Downs will be first into the ring after topping the sale again last year with a world record price for a southdown ram. to read the details about the studs for sale go to the stud sales page or click here >> 6. November. 2003 Its taken three years but the Medlicott Southdowns website has had a makeover! If you have got this far without noticing, I hope it is because you are a new visitor! Also on the homepage now there is a newsfeed which updates several times a week with mainly NZ farming related news. 16.October.

week has just seen the completion of the Southdown Society's bi-annual

The whole article can be found under the 'articles' section of this
website or by clicking here. Articles 23.November.01 Well the news below was last week now and if you haven't seen the results yet I will be updating them soon. The good news however for Medlicott Partnership is that in the Elite Merial Class,Chris (Tasvic Downs) placed first by a whisker from Bill (Clifton Downs). Below are a couple of extracts from The Press that appeared during the Royal Show. "The Southdown sheep paraded before the Australian Southdown breeder, Geoff Baker of Southern Pastures, Victoria, at the 71st New Zealand Royal Show hosted by the Canterbury A&P Association. The whole of the Southdown showing were of top quality according to Mr Baker. The Reserve Champion ram was the winning hogget owned by Chris Medlicott of Waimate. This hogget class consisted of 23 rams. The winning ram was a lengthy sheep, with a good meaty carcase, a sires head, a full loin and showing plenty of style." Also at the 6th World Sheep & Wool Congress Tasvic 99/00 was sold for $4400. 13.November.01 This week (Thursday, 14th-16th, November) the 6th World Sheep & Wool Congress is taking place at Canterbury Park in conjunction with the Royal Show and an Elite Ram Auction is being held at 3.00pm on Thursday 15th. Fourteen different breeds will be represented at the sale with the elite genetics of each breed, supported by excellence performance figures to show the quality of these rams. This gives intending purchasers a great chance to buy a superior ram of your choice. Tasvic Downs will be represented in the Southdown section of this sale. |
