Sponsors The Empire Tavern Thanks also for the use of their van to help transport the team on those "longer" engagements. 125th Jubilee CelebrationsWaimate Cricket Club's 125th Jubilee was held during Labour Weekend 2007 with a popular get together at the Waimate Town & Country Club on the Friday night where old acquaintances were re-established, scorebooks from eras gone by perused, and many yarns were told. On the Saturday Waimate manipulated the draw to have three home games and although it was windy elsewhere, managed to show the beauty of Knottingley Park as players and spectators alike sweltered in the heat. To cap off such an auspicious occasion, Waimate won all its games, in Senior against Star, Second Grade vs Celtic and the Women's team defeated TGHS for the first time I believe in 7 seasons. That night a 'Black Tie' Dinner was held at Cafe on Queen where the MC was Star captain and Labour Party candidate Julian Blanchard, Guest Speaker was former International cricketer Shane O'Connor and other guests included dignataries such as John Coles the Waimate Mayor, Harvey King Chairman of South Canterbury Cricket and representatives of the Umpires Association. Life Member David Searle was present on a night when a special presentation was made to Quintin Paul who became the Clubs second Life Member. The Sunday was marked by a Tree Planting at 11.00am and then a Past vs Present Twenty/20 match and BBQ to follow which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who participated. A full write up about this important weekend in the Waimate Cricket Club's history as well as photos will be added as time allows and photos come to hand. |

Senior Results
Latest Game: Waimate v Star - Knotts Waimate won the toss on a sunny day and asked Star to bat first. Scoring was at a premium against the tight bowling of Alan Reid as he eventually bowled 22 overs including 9 maidens on his way to taking 3-23 including the good scalp of Stephen Begg along with Julian Blanchard. At the other end Matt Devlin grabbed Phil Macgregor with his wily spinners, but it was Sam Devlin who charged in and tore the Star batsmen apart with his best performance of the season taking 5-35. Jimmy Devlin and Matt Sew Hoy also bowled tightly and eventually Star declared at 176-9 after 69 overs. In reply Waimate also found scoring difficult and big things will be expected from Austin Prue, currently not out 10 and Naffa, Al (put that one away) Reid and the rest of the lower order next weekend on Day Two as Waimate are currently three down for only 23. A week's sunshine, and Al on the heavy roller may make batting much more enjoyable next week, and allow Waimate to forge ahead to first innings points and still look at taking a winning position out of the match.

Second Grade Results
Latest Game Waimate had a bye this weekend so read about their previous match. Due to the fact that the Captain decided to follow the senior teams lead and went to a wedding instead of playing cricket this weekend I am yet to receive a report of the game, but did hear through the grapevine that stand in captain Ruha Davis astounded his fellow cricketers after winning the toss by asking Mackenzie to bat first. This proved to be a good decision as Mackenzie after great opening spells by Brad King who picked up his first 'bag' in 2nd Grade taking 5-8 from 8 overs and Craig Booth 2-12 had Mackenzie looking for a ride home as they plummetted to about 35-7. Unfortunately some older hands (Chris Galway) rescued the Mackenzie cause and they were eventually dismissed for 100 with the "wily old campaigner" Pete Wallace chiming in with 2-13. Waimate had little trouble getting the runs as Ben Fraser played superbly for 45 not out, while Greg Paul continued his good form with 20, and new recruit Tim Suddaby was not out 10 as Waimate got to 104 for the loss of only 4 wickets. From an outside analysts point of view, one wonders if "El Capitano" or Shep will be able to find a place in the lineup on current form. Silly me, of course he will, he's the captain!! Waimate have a bye next weekend which may allow some of the teams who are well behind them on the table to catch up, but currently Waimate have 24 points, twice as many as the next closest team, so although a long way off, Senior Reserve may well be a better place to test their skills next season, and build on the strength of the club.

Ladies Cricket ResultsBack to reality this week as Waimate lost narrowly to Ashburton College in an away game. Ashburton scored 100-6 with K Herbert, Cindy Halkett and Charlotte Mercer sharing the wickets, but in reply Waimate fell 7 runs short scoring 94-14 with Cindy having a fine all round game and topscoring with 20 while Bronwyn Clark 13 and M Thompson 12 being the next best batsmen. The good news though is that Waimate are second behind Roncalli on the points table, so will want some more wins under the belt before Xmas. Come on girls and send me a quick report in.
