Welcome to the oldest building on the site. This is the basement passage Cornwall's first hospital building. Being as things are usualy built from bottom to top, this section would be oldest part of any of the buildings. There hasn't been any power, to this site, in a few years and this tunnel was almost black. This is as bright as my camera flash could make it. In the distance, the rather weak light of a poorly functioning 110v worklight can be seen at the bottom of the main staircase. The rooms, to the left, do have windows which are in a kind of trench in front of the building. The tops of which are visible in one of my pictures. These were of little use though, as they were boarded up. Not a place I'd like to be alone in. It was also very cold here.

Here we have a couple of rooms on the ground floor. These are the original wards although it's been some time since they were used for this purpose. I think the one on the right was right by the original front door, but it's hard to say as it's still pretty dark here and I may be confused. Anyway, it seems to have lived out it's hospital career as an office. The one below seemed to have a more medical purpose, but it's hard to say what. I couldn't actually see when I took these pictures, I just pointed my camera in a black doorway and pressed.

Below right, is a photo of a mural I think I found on the first floor of this building. This showed that this was kids ward. There was also Dumbo, Goofy and another that I can't remember. These can be found, occaisionaly, throughout the hospital.

Above is a rather dark view from the top of the main staircase. I couldn't see what I was taking here as I had to put my arm between two of the 'anti suicide' boards fitted above the bannisters. I wish I'd used the flash, but batteries were getting a bit worn and there did seem to be light from unboarded windows. never mind. It gives a rather nice spooky look to it all. At the bottom is the rather weak light at the end of the basement passage.

Finaly, in this section, we have two veiws of the same thing. The flash didn't go off on the first one, so I took it again. I rather liked the result though so I left it in. Several years of paint are peeling off here to reveal a light, dirty green which could have been the original colour, or at leasta very early one. I think this was where the original building met the 1908 extension.

I'd like to say, at this point that I'm sorry I didn't get more pictures from inside the buildings. I somehow just managed to get pictures of certain areas and fixtures instead of whole rooms. I guess it's because I hadn't taken pictures like this before and I was talking whilst I did it. Still, never mind. Better than nothing.
