Hundreds Spot China's Tianchi Monster
[Original headline: China lays claim to its own Nessie]
Hundreds of sightseers visiting have reported spotting a black monster with a horse-like head in a deep volcanic lake near China's border with North Korea. Chinese state media reports, eagerly passed on by local tourism authorities, say the Chinese "Loch Ness monster" appeared twice recently in Tianchi Lake, in north-eastern Jilin province.
A Chinese paper has quoted local tourism official Meng Fanying as saying that in the latest sighting, the creature appeared just 10 metres from the bank, jumping out of the water from time to time "like a seal".
Rumours that the 373-metre deep lake harbours some sort of monster have been circulating for more than a century, the paper said.
However, scientists dismiss the reports, saying volcanic eruptions happening as recently as 300 years ago would make life extremely hazardous for any animal making the lake its home.
Local monster fans are unfazed by the scepticism and have even started the Tianchi Monster Society, the paper reported. The Tianchi monster is not the only "Nessie" said to be living in China.
The marine life of Hanas Lake, in north-western Xinjiang region, reputedly includes a 10-metre long salmon species that attacks both people and cattle.

The Chen-Bai Mountains' "Heaven Lake" (Tian Chi) Monster Research Association and a TV station spent several years finishing a documentary which was recently released for the World. This is the first documentary that announces to people about the "Heaven Lake monster", showing what people saw from the lake monster. Besides three video clips and 2 sets of photos, it also interviews more than ten witnesses, all of which provides evidence proving there certainly is an unknown animal or "monster" in the lake. The film is highly interesting and helps reveal the secret of one of the top 4 mysteries to the people in the world.

In the film, there are two individuals who had the special opportunity of seeing the lake monster first hand more than 7 or 8 times. One of them is a 'Jilin Province Weather Report Department staff-member named Chou Fon Yin. The other is a professor from Jilin University. The filmteam interviewed them both to relate to us many true accounts about the lake monster.

The local history of Jilin mentions the lake monster many times at the beginning of the 20th century. The first one to see the monster was Chou Fon Yin, who saw it many times and from the closest distance. Aged 66, Mr Chou works for the Weather Forecast Department, that built the Chen Bai Mountain station at lake Tian Chi, in 1958. Because of the construction, this man had to be there every year from July until October and very often worked close to Lake Tian Chi.

He said, "There is a rock about 1 mile between the lake and the weather station which is the best place to see the lake. The view is very nice."
He went there every year during the 60-ies and saw the monster 7-8 times. There are reportedly at least two kinds of monsters.

SIGHTINGS BY MR. CHOU
"The first time I saw the monster was in 1968 in the middle of october. I was looking at the lake and suddenly a wave emerged from the northeastern side followed by two black points. I used 6 times binoculars to look at it. Oh my God! Two monsters! The head was just like a dog with a black gray color. The two black points were moving under and sticking out of the water. The water wake behind the monster was at least several meters, showing that the monster swims really fast. My eyes were clear, I could not have been mistaken. After this time I always saw the monster at this place."

First day 1980 /8 /22
He and his Beijing writer-friend Lay-Ja, saw the monster again. He remembered they got up that day at 6 AM and went there to see the sunrise. He went to the place he usually went on the northern shore where you can find a big rock. There were 7-8 white vertebrae-like objects there, just like white pigs, and they stayed there half an hour. Later, there were two monsters swimming in the lake. Half an hour later they disappeared.

The second day, 8/23.
It was the last time that Mr. Chou saw the lake monster from the nearest distance. Since that day, he seldom went back to the Chen Bai mountains and never saw the monster again.
He said, "On the morning of the 23rd, me and my friend Mr Chen were back in Chung Ching. We planned to collect some lovely little pebbles for the children. We moved quickly to the lakeside and climbed onto a little hill.
At that time, we heard our colleagues from the station shouting loudly: "Watch out! The monster!"
I turned back and took a look at the lake. The monster had its mouth open and was swimming toward us. The head was big like a dog with its two ears sticking up, and light shining from its eyeballs. The mouth was flat and square. It was really scary.
The monster was about 60-70 meters away from us. Mr Chen was really scared, he pushed me to run. At that time I tried to yell at the monster loudly. The monster was shocked and turned back toward the south.
Because we came from the north and the sunlight was reflecting from the water, we could not see very clearly. Still we could see the neck of the monster sticking about 2 feet up out of the water, the head included it totalled about 1 meter.
Its color is black and gray, just like a mouse, and it also looks like it's covered with hair, without scales.
At the lakeside, my colleague told me, were several bird' cadavres and some footprints. When we went back there, the cadavres were gone. So I was wondering at the time. "Did the monster eat the dead birds?"
All these experiences confirmed to Mr.Chou, that the "thing" was definitely not rocks, nor black bears.
"Black bears cannot swim this far and that fast. It is a kind of creature that cannot be described," he said, "I found two kinds of monsters, one is of a white color, and another bigger one is black/gray. The white one is bigger than a cow. I could measure that at that distance. They swim really fast"
He also said, "According to my experience, you have to go to White Rock hill, from the northeastern side, otherwise you can't see it!"

The man is really the main witness of the Heaven Lake monster of the Chen Bai mountains.
But compared with Mr. Chou Fon Yin, Professor Chou Je Wen was lucky as well. The first time he saw the lake monster, was also the only time. But he took a picture of the monster. He took nearly 30 continuous pictures . This was really valuable for the research into the lake monster. Mr. Chou Je Wen told the reporter of his adventures with the help of the pictures.

1994.7.24.
"Me and my colleague took a vacation to Chen Bai mountain. All in all twenty friends together.
We went from West Chen Bai mountain and climbed to the top of the mountain. That day the weather was fine and the lake was just like a mirror. We could even see a small wooden boat with our bare eyes. We stayed on the mountain top for 4 hours."
He remembered and said, "It was about 3 pm, when more than 40 people discovered the lake monster moving through the lake for half an hour. One person saw something first, but then everybody noticed there was a black spot. It wasn't like a swimming person. The lake is very cold. People used 8X,12X, and 25X binoculars to take a look at it that time."
"One man among the people, a professor from Japan, had seen it as well. I took my camera and took fifty pictures. I pressed the camera shutter 5 seconds per shot in order to measure the speed of it swimming. It was about 2000 m away from the lake. I tried to shoot at different angles. The monster seemed to have much fun in the lake and swam about freely. But when it came close to the shore, it seemed to be scared off by the people and swam back to the center of the lake."
"At that time, I took one photo per second. The water wake became like a line after the monster, proving that it swims fast. The speed was about 10-20 m/ per second. It took off in the water and disappeared."
Professor Chou said, "I think it is not a land animal. It must be a water animal. The reason being its speed of swimming. When it felt fear, it took off for the water, not towards land. For this reason it proves to be some kind of water animal."
The reporter asked, "Someone said the monster may just be some floating rock. What do you think?"
The professor said, "The thing we saw, could never be a floating rock or something. It swims and moves up and down and also makes turns. Its body is big! Neither is it a boat also. Boats are bigger than the monster and always float on top of the water. The monster did not. Besides, at that time, all 40 people present there, thought it was an animal."
Mr. Chou used two rolls of film. The first one had only a few photos and the whole second roll of film were 27 pictures of the monster with continual motion. This is the strongest evidence of Heaven Lake's monster.
When will the mystery of the sky lake monster ever be fully disclosed!

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's legendary "Lake Tianchi Monster" has surfaced anew, with local officials reporting sightings of as many as 20 of the mysterious and unidentified creatures in a lake near North Korea (news - web sites). Reuters Photo Sightings of the strange beast -- China's version of the "Loch Ness Monster" -- date back more than a century, but like Scotland's famed "Nessie" reports vary and remain unconfirmed. On the morning of July 11, several local government cadres caught sight of a school of mysterious creatures swimming through the lake in the Changbai mountains, in northeastern Jilin province, the Beijing Youth Daily said on Tuesday. "Within about 50 minutes, the monsters appeared five times," it quoted one of the officials, provincial forestry bureau vice-director Zhang Lufeng, as saying. "At times there was one, at times there were several. The last time, there was as many as about 20." He said the creatures, two to three kilometers (1.25-2 miles) in the distance, appeared only as white or black spots. But from the ripples in the water, he and others determined the spots were "living beings." Officials were not reachable for comment. In 1903, according to local records, a creature resembling a huge buffalo with a deafening roar sprang out of the water and attempted to attack three people before one them shot it in the belly six times. The beast roared and disappeared back into the water. A more recently documented sighting compared the head of the monster to that of a human -- except with big round eyes, a protruding mouth and a neck 1.2 to 1.5 meters long. It also had a white ring separating its neck and torso and smooth, gray skin.
