Mail Washer is a great product. It will download the headers of your emails from your mail server or from hotmail. The program will compare the headers to various online spam blacklists, a white list of your known email friends and a black list of people who've spammed you in the past. You are then presented with a list of emails split into known senders and probably not spam(green), unknown and likely to be spam (yellow) and shameless wanton spam (red). A quick look at the subject line will identify spam most times. You can then delete the obvious spam on the server without it's attachments ever reaching your computer. After it finishes deleting your spam it opens your email program and downloads the good stuff! It's not the whole answer to spam and doesn't claim to be, but it is a very handy tool to protect yourself from blatant spam and viruses when using vulnerable mail clients.

Sometimes on installation AVGOFF2K.DLL, an important file is not registered, which means MS Office documents are not scanned when they are opened. This is easy to diagnose and fix.

DIAGNOSE: To check if your MS Office app is protected go to Tools / Macro / Security / Security Level. At the lower left of this screen a text statement will say that you have a virus scanner installed or that there is no virus scanner installed. If it says there's not one installed and you've already installed AVG we need to register it manually.

FIX: If you installed AVG in the default location it's very easy, just go to START / RUN and in the dialog box type

regsvr32 "c:\program files\grisoft\avg6\avgoff2k.dll"


Click OK and a dialog box will pop up with the message:

DllRegisterServer in c:\programfiles\grisoft\avg6\avgoff2k.dll succeeded

Now check in any of your Microsoft Office programs under Tools/Macro/Security/Security Level and it should now say 'Virus scanner installed'. AVG will now scan any file that an MS Office Application attempts to use, before its opened.

This is another great free for home use product. While not easy to setup for obscure clients, it is actually possible unlike some others.
