Gramps Garden Makeover Pt2

Back to Home Page

These photos are all about the driveway part of the landscaping - which has
definate gardening factors...

As you can see, the driveway was a bit of a mess.

So it obviously needed drainage, as well as screening of the side (ugly) panel fencing... So I had the levels graded by bobcat, and white roadbase applied. I put more roadbase down the middle because bobcats aren't good at creating 'camber'.

I then dug out (by shovel) gutters down each side.
and dug in drainage pits for stormwater runoff.

The gutter next to the fence has Poa tussock grasses planted in it (at 1m
spacings), with stone rubble to partly back fill it. this tends to trap leaves and slow water flow so that only light silt makes it through to the drain.
Also, raised beds with lotsa poo, bluestone crusher dust and sandly
loam were put between gutter and fence for three olives (near shed) and
lime, blood orange and bay trees.

Lavender (raised from cuttings from a single shrub at our previous rental home) went between gutter and house.

shaped the clay loam to slope away from the house, then filled to original
level with sandy soil - should help direct water from the house footings.
All the driveway plants are doing pretty well.

Finally, the shade sail at the end of the driveway (attached to the shed)
went in. The dog loves the shade!

That makes a reasonable transition over about 16 months... The spare soil
(from digging gutter etc) went to fill the sunken sewer trench down the back (see Part 1), and to form a new garden bed (also at back).

Next up, Part 3 - sandstone paving and turf...
