BRIEF INFORMATION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

 

Universitas Indonesia or University of Indonesia (UI) handles international students in an Organization called Pusat Mahasiswa Asing (PMA / The International Center). International students required to be able to speak in Indonesian Language as UI used it as day-to-day language in most education activities. International students who want to learn Indonesian Language can contact BIPA (Indonesian Language Program for Foreign Speakers). BIPA is a three-semester Non-Degree program administrated by Faculty of Letters, UI.

 

Documents required for Application

1.  Curriculum Vitae

2.  High school certificate for applying to the BIPA Program and Undergraduate Program BA/BSc certificate for applying MA Program, MA certificate for applying PhD Program;

3.  Copy of academic transcript from the applicant's home institution;

4.  Copy of passport;

5.  Four photographs (size 4X6);

6.  Statement of financial guarantee;

7.  Statement from an Indonesian sponsor;

8.  Statement that the applicant will not work during the applicant's stay in Indonesia;

9.  Health certificate;

10. Letter of recommendation from the Indonesian Embassy issued in the applicant's home country;

It is highly recommended that all requirements and correspondence involved in the application processes are arranged in the applicant's home country prior to arrival in Indonesia.

 

Application Procedure

1.  Applicant or the home institution of applicant sends a letter of application and required documents to : Dr. Usman Chatib Warsa, SpMK., Phd, Rector Universitas Indonesia, Gd. Rektorat Lt. 2.  With the statement of letter of acceptance from the Rector, the applicant applies a Visa to the Indonesian Embassy/Consulate in the applicant's home country.

3.  The Attaché for Culture and Education or Visa Department of the Indonesian Embassy/Consulate in the applicant's home country sends a report to the Secretary General and Directorate General for Higher Education of the Ministry of Education of Indonesia about the applicant's acceptance by Universitas Indonesia as well as the Visa having been granted to her/him.

Overseas applicants for an S1 (undergraduate) program are required to take the National State Universities Entrance Test (UMPTN), which is highly competitive. The UMPTN is held every year in the beginning of June. The Universitas Indonesia's academic year overseas applicants for an S1 (undergraduate) program are required to take the National State Universities Entrance Test (UMPTN) which is highly competitive. The UPMTN is held every year in the beginning of June. The Universitas Indonesia's academic year has two sixteen-week semesters (from August to January and from February to July). Bahasa Indonesia is the offical language of instruction, but courses in some programs are taught in English, such as Community Nutrition Studies Program, Management Program, etc.

Universitas Indonesia offers both Degree and Non-Degree programs to international students.

 

Non-Degree Programs

BIPA (Indonesian Language Program for foreign Speakers). BIPA Non-Degree Program is a three-semester program consisting of three levels (I,II,III).

 

Minimal requirement for BIPA program is High School Diploma. A candidate, however, is also required to obtain a letter of approval from the Direktorat Jenderal Pendidikan Tinggi (The Directorate General of Higher Education), or a declaration from the Fakultas Sastra (the Faculty of Letters), Universitas Indonesia, stating a candidate has met all other requirements.

 

Degree Programs

Universitas Indonesia offers programs leading to:

*   Sarjana 1 (equivalent to B.A./undergraduate level)

*   Sarjana 2 (magister's degree, equivalent to MA)

*   Sarjana 3 (doctorate program, equivalent to Ph.D.)

Degree programs are full-time programs and in general are available to international students. International students may also apply for sandwich program under an established agreement between Universitas Indonesia and the student's home university. A sandwich program is conducted partly at Universitas Indonesia and partly at the student's home university.

 

Candidates for all degree programs are required to take Indonesian Language Test arranged by BIPA. Those who obtain a score equivalent to a satisfactory result of the BIPA final test for level III are exempted from the requirement of taking BIPA Pre-course Program and eligible to directly undertake a degree program.

 

International Center of Universitas Indonesia

The International Center of Universitas Indonesia (ICVI) was estabilished in February 1999 with the coordination of the Vice Rector for Acedemic Affairs and the Vice Rector for cooperation, the Center is responsible to the Rector of Universitas Indonesia. The main respontibilities the Center are :

*   Estabilishing a mechanism of the administrative service for overseas students studying at Universitas Indonesia.

*   Monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the enrollment system and the service mechanism for overseas students studying at Universitas Indonesia.

*   Developing, estabilishing and administering international cooperation.

*   Participating in the Internationalization of Universitas Indonesia.
