INDONESIA AND SOUTH AFRICA POSTPONED ASSROC

  1. The Government of Indonesia and the Government of South Africa have been agreed to postpone the Asian-African Sub-Regional Organizations Conference (AASROC) until August 2003 at the latest. The recent developments in the global political and security situation are deemed unfavorable for holding a conference, which is expected to give a significant contribution for the future of the people in Asia-Africa.
  2. The conference, previously scheduled to be held on 15-17 April 2003 in Bandung, West Java, was aimed at establishing a strategic partnership between Asia and Africa -- in which the foundation was established during the Asian-African Conference in 1955.
  3. Indonesia and south Africa have invited 49 participants, consisted of 32 countries and 17 secretariats of sub-regional organizations, and 29 observers, comprising representatives of donor countries and international organizations. The responses to the invitation have been very positive and widely supported by the participants.
  4. However, recent developments mainly the situation in Iraq and the SARS epidemic, caused the previously arranged schedule inopportune to convene the conference.
  5. Despite the postponement, preparations for the AASROC will continuously be undertaken in order to achieve the purpose of the conference.
