Keiko Vocalizations

Orcas, as with any cetacean, are quite vocal creatures with their unique sounds they give. Vocalizations are typically used to 'see' their world by bouncing sounds off items and using the echo of these sounds to gather information about their surroundings.

It is also used to communicate between members of a pod. Different calls mean different things to the orca as they communicate. Every pod has their own special dialect, similar to how people from different countries have different accents.

Keiko began to vocalize quite a bit during his stay at the Oregon Coast Aquarium and even more so in Iceland. On this page, a very few of Keiko's vocalizations from the Oregon Coast Aquarium can be heard, by simply placing the mouse cursor over an image of Keiko an clicking...
