This model of the "RESOLUTION" is the reproduction of typical english armed cutter of middle of 18th Century. At the end of 18th century and at the start of 19th century, those cutters were used for coast survey and patrolling, and, later, also as messanger in the Royal Navy fleet and against sea piracy and illegal traders made by smugglers. They were heavily armed ships, typically carrying 8 to 12 guns and a number of falconets. This model is mainly based on plan, attribuited to Frederik Af CHAPMAN, one of the most fanous ship architects of the past, plus an integration coming from iconographic pictures. Just few infos

Short History This type of cutter made its first appearance at the beginning of 18th Century, as probable transformation of the earlier Dutch "Beezan Jacht". Its main features were a single mast carrying a large spanker with peak and boom, jib abd flying jib, and sometimes, also a large square sail or more. Generally streamlined and of greater draught the cutters were extremaly fast and had a discrete possibility of manoeuvring even in narrow waters or rough seas. Consequentely, besides fast transport of precious, perishable goods, the cutters were used immediately by Navy as avice and patrol boats. In England at the end of 18th and beginning of 19th Century, smugglers and coasguards used armed cutters. The cutter rigging, introduced by French during Napoleonic wars, was always little diffused in Italy, solely on the Ligurian and Tuscan coasts, in particular with the armoring of a second small manoeuvring mast astern and spanker without boom. |
