Past Models - RATTLESNAKE

The " RATTLESNAKE" was another model very nice to build.

This little model had some interesting things that gave me a lot of fun while building it.  First of all, the hull shape and lines, very sharp and fast that give the feeling of a very fast ship.
After, the unusual deck upperstructure, in which the forecastle and the quarterdeck are completely separated, and, the battery deck is near completely free to view.
Third and not less important, the fact that in this model I made everything from scratch, every little particular.
The model was realized without the full masting and riggings, and had, at the end, the shape you can see in the pic.

The building plans are from AMATI, and they are impressive for reachness of particulars and clearance.

Short History

The privateer ship RATTLESNAKE was built at Plymouth dockyards, Massachusetts, in 1779 or 1780, probably based on designs by John Peck.

At various times she carried from 14 to 20 guns and her complement consists of 85 men.

She was captured off the American coasts in 1781 by the British 44-gun ship ASSURANCE. She was taken to England, where she was renamed CORMORANT and her lines were drawn.

With her reduced deadrise and her very sharp fore lines, the RATTLESNAKE must have been very fast. She had a detached forecastle and quarterdeck, linked by gangways, which were unshipped during the battles.
