This model of "MAYFLOWER" was the second ship I built, after the ELISABETHAN's Galleon. By building this model I made better my technique in planking the hull, but at that time, I was still use to build a hull with only one layer of planks. So, also this model was full of mistakes about many things, but was also a bit better than the previous ship!! This building helped me to understand a good rule : once ended a model, look it again to find any mistake and remember thet in the next model. Also about this ship I have not pics, and I'll use that one took by AMATI catalogue. Like any galleon of that age, it was also enough coloured on the top of hull. It was also an enough great model, that helped me to build by myself some (not all !!) particulars of the deck. |

Short History Probably the MAYFLOWER was, with Columbus' SANTA MARIA, one of the most famous ships in all the times. Unfortunately, very fews (and true) informations exist about this ship, that in the 1620, brought the Pilgrims Fathers from England to the New World, searching the religious freedom that was not permitted them in the motherland. The trip started the August, 15th 1620, and the Pilgrims boarded on two vessels, the MAYFLOWER and the SPEEDWELL. But, due the bad conditions of the hull, the SPEEDWELL was not considered enough good to cross the Atlantic Ocean. So it come back with 18 or 20 people that prefer do not continue the trip. By this reason, the MAYFLOWER hold a great number of passengers and, at last, the September, 16th 1620, the MAYFLOWER sailed for his trip with 102 passengers (men, women and childrens). After a good and calm start, the trip continued between strong winds and storms At the end of October, the wether become better and the ship arrived in the November, 9th 1620, near Cape Cod. During the trip, there was a born of a children, and the die of a young man. The people understood that they arrived about 200 miles northern of the planned place and they decided to continue the trip towards south. But the bad conditions of sea and the near of winter, brought the Pilgrims Father to decide to come back to Cape Cod. The November, 11th 1620, after 67 days of trip, the MAYFLOWER approached to the place that nowdays is knowed as Pricetown's Port. But, because the weather reasons, they continue to explore the coast, until the December, 15th 1620, when they landed definitively in the port of Plymouth (Massachusetts) where they found their town. The MAYFLOWER come back in England in May, 6th 1621 and from this date it desappeared from the history. |
