Past Models - VENETIAN LAGOON's BRAGOZZO

This model of "BRAGOZZO" was the first fishing boat I ever buid.

As you know, probably reading all the infos about the other my models, until now I built sail warships, transport or merchant ships, all coming   from foreign countries than Italy.

Well, for the birthday of a a very close friend, I decided just 4-5 months before, to build a little ship to put on the library of his office. Looking around, I saw in the AMATI catalogue the photo of a very nice fishing boat, the BRAGOZZO, typical of the Venetian Lagoon and I decided immediately to  gift to my friend a model of this.

Probably the decision come to my mind thinking that his greatest hobby is fishing....
So, once acquired a set of building plans, I started to build this nice model. Believe me..the building was not so simple as you can imagine, also because the stern of this ship is bothh strongly rounded and flat to the end.. and to put on the planking was not very simple.

Once finished the hull, was enough fast to buid the deck and all the superstructures. The most fun time was when I painted this nice boat and the sails. I made it in the colurs black, white, blue, red and natural wood, while the sails were red and yellow (like in this pic)

Unfortunately, like for some of my old models, I have not a pic of the model, but I'm sure that it is still now on the library of my friend's office.

Short History

Unfortunately I have no detailed informations  about the history of this type of fishing boat.
Just the fact that they're enough old in time and style, and some of them are still used   by old fishermans of the Venetian Lagoon.

One of the most important characteristics of this type of boats is the large rudder, deeper than the hull , that permits a good managing of the boat near the open sea. When the boat is inside the lagoon, cause the few deep of water, the rudder can be raised and the flat hull permits to the ship to boat also in few centimeters of water.

Another characteristic of this type of boat is the colour and the design of the sails. All the colours and their positions have a precise meaning about the owner of the ship or his family. Typical is also the prow, lightly curved back on the deck.
