A.K.A. "Uncle Trobo"

Name: Kayon A. Curvin
Age: 20
Place of Origin: May Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica

I first tasted fresh air after 9 hours of labour because of my mother, a mother like no other but Blanche Crawford I love her. She gave birth to me in the Mandeville Hospital located in the parish/province of Manchester on March 2, 1982. I spent the first eight years of my life in Manchester living with my grandparents, but later moved to Clarendon (the neighbouring parish) to live with my mom. Clarendon is situated in the central part of the country in the county of Middlesex. I started high school soon after to get a better understanding of the world and to increase my knowledge.

I am a past student of one of Jamaica’s most outstanding high schools “Glenmuir High”. I spent 5 years gathering knowledge and applying it onto paper of which I very successful. I was too young to attend college so I then took a one year computer course at the Knox Community College just to by me some time. After which I was drilled to join the National Youth Service by my sister who has supported me through everything (thick & thin). I graduated from the N.Y.S. as a teaching assistant, where I was placed at a Primary and Junior High for the next 9 months.
After finishing the 9 months I was selected for the JamNet Youth Program and here I am a JamNet past participant who has gotten a new knowledge and a cultural exchange. I must say thanks to my sister for her encouragement love and support. I am a child of God and I put him first every time. My philosophy is: the sky is not the limit aim for the heavens above.
Currently I live in a very small community called Swansea Meadows with my brother and sister. Yes! the same sister that has supported me.

Why did you join the program?
To get the exposure of a different culture and to get a first hand view of life in a first world country. I also wanted to feel what its like living in a first world country and most excitingly to see snow for the first time.

What did you achieve?
I achieved skills such as self confidence, adaptation, flexibility, tolerance and, most of all new and life long friends.

What was the funniest thing that happened on the program?
Darius, my counterpart, trying to put in his contacts.

What are your future plans?
Going to college to pursue a diploma in teaching and also to start a community access point in Osborne store.

Even though it was cold there I really manage to enjoy myself going around exploring and finding stuff to do that don't cost money (FREE). The folks there were very polite and courteous towards us and each other.
