Name: Charmaine Renee
Lee
Age:25
Place of Origin: Cape Pélé, New Brunswick,
Canada
Why I joined CWY: In February 2002, I was in Mexico City and coming up to
the end of a six month contract. I was looking for something exciting to do
which involved cross-cultural learning, international development, youth,
travel and a non-conventional working environment. And Voila!, the posting
for the Project Supervisor position with CWY appeared, I applied, got through
the nightmarish selection day and was offered the Jamaica NetCorps program.
What I think of the program: I think it’s an absolutely unique and stimulating
learning environment for participants, PS, host families, work placements
and community members. On a daily basis, we are part of a movement which brings
people from different cultures and backgrounds together to build bridges of
understanding, empowers people to make contributions to a better, more sustainable
world, and helps in the strengthening of communities around the world.
By looking at OUR program, well I am happy with the successes of our group,
and looking forward to the continued efforts to build on our strengths
and explore the amazing potential we hold.
Every day is a new challenge and a choice. My hope for the participants is that they
will learn to fully embrace the new challenges that come with each sunrise,
and make the commitment, on a daily basis, to leave this day with the best
of who they are.
Hobbies:
Walking, reading, cycling and travelling
Favorite Saying:
“Kenyama! I can’t believe you just said that.”
Favorite Songs:
“Oh Ma Ma” by Bois Joli
“Alive” by Celine Dion
“If You Could Read My Mind” by Gordon Lightfoot
Why did you join the program?
To learn, travel, and impact the lives of other young adults.
What did you achieve?
I managed to have a very successful counterpart relationship, a team that
has embraced the values of the program wholeheartedly and who have made me
truly proud.
What was the funniest thing that happened on the program?
Seeing my counterpart make a fool of himself at the Barachois (Barra-shwa,
a popular French band) concert in Charlottetown, while showing off his newly
acquired French “skills” with one of the group members!
What are your future plans?
Do a few other CWY programs, pursue Graduate studies in Intercultural Relations
and continue with my travels. Find love along the way perhaps...
