Note: All this information is from my own personal knowledge and I do not claim that everything in here is absolute fact. I might even be remembering things wrongly, it was after all a long time ago. Others who were there undoubtedly have their own versions of the "day of the knives." :P The first I ever heard of it was whispers in the game of some players being able to hit 30s. This was Jan or very early 2002, I think, and the max hit was supposed to be 30 with 99 str and no one had 99 str yet, iirc. Example: One day as I stopped by hobs on my way to ices I said hi to Dj Aztech (Stinger, LKJ's old flame) and he was rather disturbed about something. Dj: Meili, *name removed* taught
his gf how to hit 30s, they hacked the game.
Then some guy (X Magna X???) posted that he had a r2h and could hit 30s. Everyone laughed at him and called him a newbie, however numerous people actually did see him hit a 30. Tsk, tsk! The next thing I know about it is when I log in at hobs and God420247 and Angel2002 are having a conversation. God was showing Angel how to use the knife bug, however they were still keeping it secret. Then a friend pm'ed me that he was gonna teach me a lil trick to hit 30s. Apparently somebody posted how to use the knife bug on tip it forums or maybe Killgen forums and everyone and his newbie were now using it. You could tell who knew it because there was only one place to get knives, upstairs of the varrock shop. Met Phr0st there for the first time. ;) How the knife bug worked: Special note: this does not work anymore and these pics are recent ones, not from the actual time that you could do the knife bug. In your inventory have a weapon
and knives in the space to the right of the weapon. Click on the mini map
so that your char starts walking then click on "drop the weapon."
Now, as I'm sure we all know, if you try to drop something while you are
walking it doesn't drop until your char has stopped. Before you char stops
moving, right click on the weapon, as shown on the pic below:
In the pic below it shows that the weapon has been dropped, however the "wield weapon"option is still available and the knife is now in the place where the weapon was. If you click on "wield" then the knives were wielded!
When a knife was equipped it added weapon aim and power, the more knives you had equiped, the more weapon aim/power you had. The only drawback was if you equiped a lot of knives you had no room for food. :P The story continued: So after my friend showed me the "trick" (lmao I was too dumb to realize I was exploiting a bug and it was bad) I went to ices and called 2 friends over to show them the nice lil "nat" 25s I was hitting. However, although I hadn't mentally classified it as a "bug" I did realize it was crazy so after about a few minutes I dropped the knives. Strange, but true. Didn't even pk with it. That day was wild fun, though. My higher level friends hit 40s and higher rofl!!!! And they almost got 2 hit by level 60 newbies. Hahaha. Imagine having knife bug today I bet I'd hit 99. Playing with knives is fun until somebody gets cut. :( In this case the bannings started and a lot were perm banned, the highest level I believe was Bigkingsfan. Others were Angel2002, God420247, Grubyyyyyyy, Trupimp, Silentboy05 and more. Strangely, *name removed* wasn't banned although his gf and Dj Aztech were. The aftermath: Apart from the sadness of losing friends who were perm banned, the "day of the knives" when like 90 percent of RS used or at least tested knives was a day of fun. Seems that hardly anyone died to the knife bug or lost anything important. Newbs were made with names like "Knives" "K N I F E" etc. and there were a ton of funny posts on tip it. Who Da Best: "I was at grave and a level 60 attacked me and hit 25 26 0, I had to run like a mofo." WDB was at the time in the top 5 fighters list I believe. I was a friend of God420247 and he told me on msn that he had pked a ton of rune because he had known about the knife bug for weeks. He got millions worth, including battleaxes, which were expensive, and rune sqs, which were extremely expensive. Old posts on the knife bug: Paul explains that he let two characters who were perm banned for the knife bug back in the game The first person banned for knife bug How people were banned: BKF: caught pking with knives. Killed Fulkner with it. Grubyyyyyyy: caught pking with knives, however he says he only got iron and bronze stuff off newbies and he would gladly return them if he could get his char back. Angel2002: rather ironic really, he was training at ices and Sir Beachy (who hated Angel) attacked him. Angel was using knives to train and he killed Sir Beachy. Then Sir Beachy reported him and he was perm banned. Angel claimed to never haved pked with knives at all. God420247: Paul didn't even find him out, after Angel was banned he made a post on tip it saying "If I'm banned for knife ban, God420247 should be banned too because he was the one who taught me." That's true as far as it goes because I was there when God taught Angel (they kept it mostly in pms so I didn't get the actual "how to use" but I got the gist of it). Silentboy05: he saw Xcav hitting wild numbers and asked how he did it. Cav showed him how and according to what Sil posted on tip it a newbie saw him and Max333 fighting, and Sil was using the knives. Sil and Max were best friends though so it was just a play fight. After those system messages
of the bans of a lot of players, it got crazier and crazier with everybody
using the knife bug so the next day Jagex implemented a punishment for
players who used the knife bug. They had this rather cool thing worked
out where if you logged in and your char had knives equipped then you would
instantly be killed. Good job, Jagex! IMHO they should've just done that
to everyone and not perm banned some.

A pic of the automatic punishment you received the day after the knife bug was fixed. People who logged in with knives equipped got instantly killed this way. Not sure who showed me this pic, probably Hohto.
