Obtaining USA Government Records

  • NARA's holdings of electronic records - use the Internet to check more than 50 million historical records at the US National Archives, (NARA) from Civil War battles to other Military Records. Supposedly they will eventually have access to immigration files but so far its slim pickings. The database draws from the records of 20 federal agencies.
  • NARA Military Service & Pension Records - The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the official repository for records of military personnel who have been discharged from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard.

  • "LDS" FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Collection - It is FREE - take a look, find a center near you, do a search. Also read their helpful Family Search Research Guidance. Check out their Library Catalog too.
  • Big List of Ship Searches / Immigrant Ship Passenger Arrival Records - Passenger Ships Arrival Records are great for genealogy research.
  • Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet - by Cyndi Howells.
  • Helm's Genealogy Toolbox - is the oldest comprehensive genealogical site. It contains links to over 130,000 genealogical pages, a genealogically focused search engine, and digitized original records by Matthew L. Helm.
  • Genealogy.com - plenty of genealogy help at this site plus plenty of forums, It was one of my favorite places but has recently been bought out. I will still link to it as long as much of it is free but when it get like that overly commercial site that ruins all the free sites I will not link to it.
  • RootsWeb.com - The oldest and largest free genealogy site has THOUSANDS of Databases and Files for your Genealogy Research Needs. Literally hundreds of millions of names. They were the best now they have sold out and slowly changes are being made but they are still easy to use and a great source of info.
  • Repositories of Primary Sources - A listing of over 5000 websites describing holdings of manuscripts, archives, rare books, historical photographs, and other primary sources for Genealogy Research. (includes a great selection of Italian Genealogical Links among others.)
