1. WHO CAN JOIN?

Italian Genealogy Hobbyists who have non-commercial websites and the page on which you have your Italian Genealogy Web Surf Ring Navigation Fragment should not contain other types of Genealogy. PLEASE keep it focused on Italian Genealogy ONLY.

Your page must contain information related to your own Italian Genealogy and your Family Tree from Italy / Italia.

If your page also contains those 'Websurf Gray Strip / Java Script navigation bars, please post our Italian Genealogy Ring HTML fragment ABOVE those type of navigation bars because they often cause various download problems due to the JavaScript & AD-ware/spyware scripts).
If you have a 'frames' site, then the full URL (address) for your "Ring surf" page will be used for this ring's purposes - please make sure you have a link to your home page on your ring page.
You agree to keep your web site and e-mail addresses up to date through the ring edit page. (If for some reason your web page is discontinued, please remove your site from the ring through the edit page). Both of the above situations result in 'broken links' in our ring.

Please be advised! If during spot checks your URL (site address) yields a "not found error" your site will be removed from the index back to the ring queue (waiting list). An email to this effect will be sent to you advising that it will remain on the queue for 2 weeks; after this time if the correct address is not submitted, your site will be removed from the ring. If the email message also bounces as undeliverable - it will be taken for granted that you are no longer interested in maintaining your ring membership and your site will be deleted from the ring immediately.

2. 'NO' for this Ring !

No sites requiring membership or special passwords such as MyFamily.com, Broderbund Family Tree Maker sites, etc.

No Professional Genealogists. No commercial sites. No sales sites.

Do not use a 'redirect' url. The Italian Genealogy Ring fragment must appear on your actual site.
No commercial sites other than the FREE web site servers, like Geocities/Yahoo, Angelfire, Anzwers, Bravenet, doteasy, fortunecity, freeWebspace.net, 150m, justfree, Tripod, Rootsweb free accounts, etc., which have an Ad or banner to support their "gift" of free hosting. Pop-up ads are used today on the internet by many "FREE" web hosting sites. Some of them are worse than others and lately many of these "free" servers have become very obnoxious with their ads so you might consider moving your genealogical site to a free server with fewer ads or use the space given to you by your ISP provider.
Please do not use a JavaScript 'splash' or Flash page if that is the only access to your site - many online genealogists do NOT have & do not want the technology to deal with Flash, Java, ActiveX or other script interference, which often comes with security problems anyway, so many computer savvy users are disabling them in their Internet Browsers.
NO sites that I cannot easily access by testing with old browsers such as IE 3.5 and Netscape version 3. Your site must be accessible to many of the old-time genealogy researchers who are now on-line and do not care about the twinkling bells & whistles.

If your site has a lot of flash & splash, and requires special scripts to view, remember that most genealogists are basically looking for your family history information and may not be interested in your cute decorations. Most do not surf using the most up to date browsers and equipment, or simply dislike frames, java script, excessive graphics, ActiveX, other peoples music, flashing lights, etc. Please do not expect genealogists to download different browsers or other types of software in order to access your website, most would rather watch a movie, visit friends or go to a concert for entertainment.

Genealogy visitors are looking for genealogical information when they visit your site. If your site is too involved in visual entertainment so that ONLY the most modern systems can access your pages, there is a chance that you may not be added to the ring if you do not provide alternate pages.

Please do not link to the graphic on any of the members sites. In addition to delaying downloading of your page, linking of graphics is considered 'bandwidth theft'. Please download the Italy Roots Ring Logo to your own hard drive and then upload it to your server. Simply Right Click with your mouse from the List page and download to your own computer. Then load it up to the server that hosts your Italian Genealogy Site or Pages where you have put your HTML fragment.

5. Html coding fragments:

After you have filled in the form above, you need to add one of the following html fragments to your site.
Shortly after registering you should receive an e-mail message containing your 'customized' html fragment (that means that your site ID number is already coded into the fragment). Simply 'cut and paste' this fragment into your editor (with the 'word wrap' function turned off ) and then post it to your web page. Or, if you want to use one of the alternative ring set-ups see the html fragments that are listed below.
