Like you, I also have my mother's scrapbook of the W.W.II
veterans from Harrison County--and many are of the same veterans. My father, William Ward Golden survived
W.W.II; he flew eighty- two missions over the China Burma India Hump to carry supplies and ammunition.
He received the Distinguished Flying Cross. He later became part of the group who formed to be the Hump
Pilots Association. He died on May 04, 1990, two weeks before he was to be seventy-one years old.
I still have his dress uniform hanging in my closet with the distinguished flying cross on the left side.
I have always been so proud of him. He married my mother, Mary Amelia Shreve Golden, and had two
daughters. My mother's scrap book had deteriorated so much that I thought that I had to throw it away----
but I could not. I went to Office Max and had it laminated. A lady was standing beside me; she was so impressed
with all of the W.W.II information that I have. My father was one of three brothers who served in W.W.II. I have
been told that my grandmother spent a lot of time praying during that time. Bless her heart. All three of her sons
returned home from W.W.II. My dad returned to his home area and continued working at Union Carbide until his
retirement. He remained very loyal to the veterans. He was a commander at the VFW in Clarksburg, WV. He also
served over five thousand hours as a volunteer at the veteran' s hospital in Clarksburg.
Also on page 12 is his brother, James M. Golden, my uncle. He was a pilot in W.W.II. My aunt, before
her death about two years ago,
requested a list of his medals; it was an impressive list. When I was born , he was stationed in Manila;
he sent me a tiny, gold ring that said, "Manila-45." I treasure that little, tiny ring because it came from my uncle---
-of whom I was also very proud. He returned home and married Mary Margaret Alonzo. He was a brick mason; he
did exceptional work. They had three sons and two daughters. My uncle Jim just died within the last two years.
On page 14, is the third brother, Robert Golden, who drove a tank in W.W.II; he also received many honors
during his service time. He returned to his hometown of Anmoore, WV----married Irene Smith and have six sons
and a daughter. He retired from Union Carbide. He died within the last two years.
My dad's sister, Kathleen
Golden Weekley is married to Howard J. Weekley, on page 7; he is still residing with my aunt in Bridgeport, WV.
He has told me the story that one day his ship was leaving port, but he was sick and they would not let him go out;
he was assigned to sick bay. The ship went down, and if he had been on the ship he would have died in W.W.II.
He worked at Hazel Atlas--became very skilled at his job--and then retired. He has a son and a daughter.
