LEECH TIME!
To get anime-related stuff (this is half of my life), go to these IRC channels (I'm on these often as 'funyun')
irc.mircx.com

  • #animemp3
  • #anime-ost
  • #anime-keep
  • #animeone
  • #anbudom
  • #mangaproject

    General IRC FAQ

  • Get mIRC or some other IRC client
  • Go to options and select something like mIRC-X, EnterTheGame, or Aniverse and hit "connect to server"
  • When connected type "/join #(channel name)" (no quotes)
  • Leech through typing "!list" and copying and pasting the triggers and getting in queue
  • Also leech new releases through xdcc bots - general syntax is "/msg CHANNEL|BotName xdcc list"

A newer leeching method is BitTorrent. This is file sharing is based on leechers sharing what they've leeched. Links for these BT trackers (for the original file) are Animesuki (unlicensed only) and Mircx.

My own recommendations (until I make a reviews page):
    Just plain good

  • Scrapped Princess - based off a series of novels, a girl is wanted dead because it is prophesized she a poison that will destroy the world
  • Escaflowne - the series, not the movie. Much more serious anime. A girl is transported to a beautiful place. She possesses a strange power to predict things.
  • Read or Die OVA - short action series with an AMAZING soundtrack. A little Bond style, agents work with each other, each have a unique and special, very cool ability
    For the action-oriented
  • Trigun - guns guns guns. The main man is wanted for 60,000,000,000 or so money because of how destructive he is. But all he wants is donuts, love and peace
  • Hunter X Hunter - action series. Centers around four guys and their attempt to attain a Hunter License through a series of tests. Becomes deep and serious but very cool
    For the lighthearted and psychotic
  • Jubei-chan - kind of crazy genre. Story outlines the lovely eyepatch that transforms the wearer into a legendary powerful ninja. Not always serious
  • Cardcaptor Sakura - magical girl genre, more cute in general. A girl must collect all of the "Clow Cards" using her magical power
  • Karekano - high school drama. Funny and serious. Be warned, this series does not end in the anime. The ending (or lack of) particularly sucks. But the stuff up until the 20s is good
  • Di Gi Charat - crazy genre with cute characters. Series derived from a gaming company's mascot. Full of craziness and often nothingness but good fun
  • Dragon Half - crazy genre with extreme SD drawings. The creators were supposedly arrested for being on crack, that's why it's only two episodes. Funny funny stuff
  • Excel Saga - crazy genre. A man wants to rule the world and his subordinates are crazy. One talks way too fast and the other dies every episode
  • Puni Puni Poemi - spin-off of Excel Saga. So, yes it's crazy. The main character wants to be a voice actress, and a family of sisters possess straaange powers...
That's more than enough to get you started =)

But if you really want more, here's what some other people might recommend (I like most of these):

  • Ah My Goddess - divine love and crazy sisters
  • Fushigi Yuugi - mysterious book and adventures, sometimes funny
  • Inu Yasha - a long series, demons and swords and legends
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion - one of the most controversial animes
  • Love Hina - a poor guy living in a girl's dormitory
  • Ranma 1/2 - a long series, the main guy changes to a girl with water
  • Rurouni Kenshin - serious and funny, lots of swords and historic Japan
  • Slayers - funny series, haven't personally watched it though
  • Vandread - war between men and women

    Some definitions:

  • anime: short for japanese animation (uhh i think). Essentially the cartoons from Japan
  • series: like different TV series, anime has different series. There is no one anime
  • OAV/OVA: original animation video/original video animation. Special (usually) short releases of popular series
  • manga: graphic novels, comics, storytelling with art
  • IRC: forgot what acronym was =D but essentially the program I use to download stuff
  • IRC server: different servers an IRC client connects to
  • IRC channel: channels within a server, where the leeching begins
  • jpop/cpop/kpop: japanese/chinese/korean popular music
  • SD/Chibi: SD=super-deformed, chibi=small person(?). Those fat little drawings that make the character look insanely cute
  • cosplay: basically for the real anime fans, where they dress up and often perform some act
    That should do for now...

    BABBLE TIME

Why does so many people seem to be going crazy about anime? Because it's so much better than the stupid cartoons they make in America where 'Big and Buff beats Mean and Ugly'. And each series has its own unique story to tell and unfold (usually), unlike cartoons made here where heroes are introduced and each episode is just a stupid round of "there's the enemy, oh no something's wrong, ok it's fixed now we can beat them, yippee corny punch line, the end". And anime isn't oriented towards kids like it is here. And also, the MUSIC is sooo much better in anime series. It doesn't sound corny and just random guitar tunes, it sounds planned out, orchestrated, amazing in some cases, and just plain better than cartoons here. Okay, so that's why I like anime more than cartoons here.

Disclaimer: I do not hate ALL American cartoons. Nor do I adore ALL anime. There are exceptions to everything out there. 'Big and Buff beats Mean and Ugly' is just a generalization.
    Now that that's said...
I am a fan of anime, manga, and music. Want me to prove it? I have some 400+ cds of burned anime, 6+ gigs of unburned manga, and 10+ gigs of anime mp3s. I also have quite a selection of jpop, random cpop/kpop, and video game music (most of which comes from Japan).

Despite all these stats, I'm more of a collector than a fan. Of my collection of anime, I think I've seen maybe 30% of what I have. Of my manga, I've read maybe 20%. But of my music, I've listened to probably 60%. Because I'm more of a collector, I'm often seen on IRC channels, just leeching away at something I might watch/listen to later in my life when I'm bored. Links will be provided below to my anime, manga, and mp3 list (soon). If you want to trade, I can usually be found on irc.mircx.com under the nickname of funyun, unless I ran out of bandwidth for the week 0=)
